A casting mold for manufacturing grid plates for lead batteries makes use of easily interchangeable mold inserts for each half of a two-part, external metallic mold holder. The mold inserts are made of a highly porous microfiber nonwoven material, and render unnecessary the conventional cork-flour coating of casting molds due to good thermal insulating properties, high permeability to air and non-wettability by lead. The casting mold inserts are manufactured in a process which involves fixing of the nonwoven material with a curable binder either during or after shaping of the negative for the grid plate, so that the resulting parts assume a cardboard-like consistency.

The temperature rise associated with the catalytic recombination of battery gases at the end of the charging process is converted into an electrical signal suitable for checking and controlling charging, in a temperature-sensitive component such as a commercially available NTC or PTC resistor coated with a PTFE-bound palladium-activated carbon mixture. An additional activated carbon layer protects the catalyst from poisoning by the stibine present in the battery gases.

The battery pole extends through a tubular opening in the plastic battery lid. The pole shaft is surrounded by a synthetic plastic mantle which adjoins the tubular opening in frictionally sealing manner.

A lead storage battery terminal is constructed of copper or aluminum sleeving, which may be clad with lead, and is sealed into the terminal aperture in the battery lid. The bottom of the sleeve is closed and permanently attached to the lead pole bridge.
