A railway bogie or a vehicle is so suspended to axleboxes on a plurality of wheelsets that each wheelset can yaw about a center of yaw, move laterally and move vertically relatively to the frame of the bogie or vehicle. Each axle box has a pair of radially opposed arms extending vertically and links extend from the arms in opposed directions laterally to the plane containing the axis of the axle. The links are ball jointed to the arms and also at their other ends. One link is connected to the link on the other side of the frame via a mechanism transmitting motion across the frame. Such a mechanism may involve a beam pivoted to the frame, bell cranks connected by struts, a torsion bar with arms projecting from it or hydraulic conduits between links which are hydraulic piston and cylinders. The mechanism may be repeated on the other side or the links on that side may simply be jointed to the frame. The purpose of the mechanism is to inhibit longitudinal movement of the center of yaw of each wheelset.

Railway vehicle suspension

A mobile apparatus for determining the lateral position of a railroad track with respect to an adjacent railroad track without physical contact with the adjacent railroad track and for indicating the determined lateral position, which comprises a carriage mounted for movement along the railroad track, a laser beam emitting and receiving instrument mounted on the carriage for focussing on the adjacent railroad track and fixed parts of the right of way to measure the distance thereof from the instrument, the instrument having coincident optical axes for emitting and receiving the laser beam and said axes extending in a transverse plane perpendicular to the track, and means for indicating the measured distance.

Mobile apparatus for determining the lateral position of a railroad track

A mobile rail head planing machine comprises a pair of tool carriers vertically adjustably mounted on a machine frame, respective ones of the carriers being associated with a respective track rail. Each tool carrier carries a metal shearing tool engaging with the lateral outside face of the rail head of the respective rail and guide rollers respectively engaging the running faces and lateral outside faces of the rail heads guide each tool carrier along the respective rail. Power-actuated jacks press the guide rollers against the rail head faces they engage for guiding each tool carrier clearance-free along the rails.

Mobile machine for removing surface irregularities from rail heads

A mobile ballast cleaning machine mounted on a track for movement in an operating direction incorporates apparatus for continuously measuring parameters indicating the track position and any changes therein with respect to a reference system caused by ballast excavation, and for recording the measured parameters. This apparatus comprises hydrostatic level measuring devices mounted in the region of the front and rear undercarriages at the laterally extending sides of the machine frame, two further hydrostatic level measuring devices transversely spaced apart and mounted in the laterally outermost regions of the endless ballast excavating chain, an additional hydrostatic level measuring device mounted in the region of a track sensing element arranged on the frame forwardly of the front undercarriage, and a conduit connected to the hydrostatic level measuring devices for delivering a liquid thereto. The devices comprise emitters of electrical output signals corresponding to the measured parameters whereby the apparatus is capable of providing a reference base for the parameters superelevation, inclination and lowering of the track level.

Mobile ballast cleaning machine

A track working or transport vehicle comprises a frame and two undercarriages supporting the frame. Springs are mounted between the side frames of the undercarriages and the vehicle frame, the springs having a stroke whose length is proportional to variable loads distributed to a respective undercarriage wheel from the vehicle frame. A displacement pickup is connected to each group of springs and arranged to measure the stroke thereof, the pickup generating an electrical output signal proportional to the measured stroke. An arrangement for continuously monitoring and indicating the loads distributed to the respective wheels includes a summation circuit having a first input receiving the output signals from the pickups, a second input received fixed electrical signals proportional to the weight of non-yieldingly mounted parts of the undercarriages, and an output transmitting electrical output signals proportional to the wheel loads derived from the inputs. An indicator device receives each output signal from the summation circuit and correspondingly indicates the wheel loads.

Track working or transport vehicle

A measuring carriage for measuring the undulations and ripples of a worn rail head running surface is guided along the rail head by a pair of guide rollers laterally guiding the carriage along a portion of the gage side of the rail head which is not worn and a plurality of additional guide rollers selectively engageable with the running surface of the rail head for vertically guiding the measuring carriage along the running surface upon engagement therewith. The additional guide rollers include a pair of inner guide rollers, a pair of outer guide rollers and a pair of intermediate guide rollers spaced from each other in the operating direction. The pair of outer guide rollers defines a rigid measuring reference in the wave length of the longer undulations and they are spaced from each other a distance of 2 m. A respective lateral pair of the inner or intermediate guide rollers is selectively engaged with the running surface to define a rigid measuring reference in the shorter wave length of the ripples and these rollers are spaced from each other at least about 1/6th to 1/8th of the first-mentioned distance. A rail head running surface sensing element is vertically adjustably mounted on the measuring carriage substantially centered between the pairs of guide rollers.

Measuring apparatus for rail head running surface irregularities

A mobile machine for removing surface irregularities from the faces of rail heads comprises a machine frame, at least one pair of tool carriers transversely aligned with respect to the track and a respective one of the tool carriers being associated with a respective one of the rails, each of the tool carriers being vertically adjustably mounted on the machine frame and arranged for guidance along the respective rail in a vertical and lateral direction, and at least one metal removing tool carried by each of the tool carriers, and at least one longitudinally adjustable spacing member extending transversely to the track between the tool carriers. A pivot connects respective ends of the spacing member to the respective tool carriers, the axes of the pivots extending preferably vertically to a plane defined by the track.

A mobile machine mounted on a track for advancement therealong for removing irregularities from the surfaces of the rail heads comprises a machine frame, a tool carrier vertically adjustably mounted on the machine frame and arranged thereon for guidance along a respective track rail, and a cutter head on the tool carrier. The cutter head has a cutting tool capable of machining the surface of the head of the respective track rail continuously upon advance of the tool carrier along the track rail.

Mobile machines for removing surface irregularities from rail heads

A mobile rail grinding machine comprises a machine frame mounted on the rails of a track for continuously moving in the direction of, and along, the track, a tool carrier frame vertically adjustably mounted on the machine frame, a rail grinding tool or a group of such tools mounted on the carrier frame for vertical adjustment in a direction vertical to the machine frame to press the tool or tools against surface areas of the rails to grind irregularities off the surface areas, and a drive for imparting to the tool carrier frame a reciprocating working movement in the direction of the track independent of, and additional to, that simultaneously imparted to it by the movement of the machine frame. The invention also is directed to a rail grinding method wherein the rail is ground by such a compound working movement.

A mobile apparatus for measuring the profile of a railroad tunnel comprising a car mounted for mobility on the railroad track, a beam emitter and receiver instrument capable of continuously receiving a signal corresponding to the distance of the tunnel profile from the instrument, a rotatable axle supporting the instrument on the car for pivoting about an axis extending parallel to the longitudinal track axis, and a drive arranged to pivot the instrument about the axis extending parallel to the track axis whereby the instrument may sweep the profile and continuously receive the signal.

Apparatus for measuring the profile of a railroad tunnel

A vehicle with a spring-supported frame has torsion transmitting hydraulic cylinders arranged between the ends of the axles of the undercarriages and the frame. Each cylinder is in torsion transmitting connection with the frame and conduits interconnect corresponding cylinder chambers at each side of the vehicle.

A mobile track surveying apparatus comprises two spaced-apart bogies. Track gage and superelevation measuring devices as well as track grade and lateral alignment measuring devices are mounted on the two bogies, the latter including a theodolite mounted on a carrier plate on one bogie and a target mounted on a carrier plate on the other bogie, the theodolite and target defining an optical reference line determining the grade and alignment of the track.

Mobile track surveying apparatus

In an apparatus for measuring the lateral distance between adjacent tracks, a measuring axle has a wheel which is selectively engageable without play with a selected rail of one track while a pivotal projecting arm associates therewith has laterally movable mounted thereon a rolling element for adjusting to the lateral distance between the measuring axle and the rolling element. The rolling element is arranged to sense one rail of the adjacent track as it rolls therealong, and an indicator produces a measuring signal indicating the adjusted lateral distance.
