Ignition means for propellant powders

The subject of the present invention is lead- and barium-free propellant charges with primary explosives mixed with oxygen-supplying substances, characterized in that the primary explosives are selected from alkali metal and/or alkaline earth metal salts of dinitrobenzofuroxanes and the oxygen-supplying substances are chosen from metal peroxides, nitrates of ammonium, guanidine, aminoguanidine, triaminoguanidine, dicyanodiamidine, and the elements sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, cerium, and/or multivalent metal oxides. The propellant charges according to the invention exhibit increased stability with respect to known propellant charges that are free of harmful substances.

Lead-and barium-free propellant charges

The invention relates to the connection of tubular sections ( ) of combustible propellant charge cases consisting of one or several windings of textile threads which are connected to propellants by binding means. Said charge cases are dimensionally stable and have a high level of mechanical resistance. The aim of the invention is to create a safe, resistant, tight connection and to ensure that cracks do not form unchecked during the connection process. To this end, the tubular sections ( ) to be connected are inserted into each other, said inserted tubular sections ( ) are connected by means of a non-releasable snap connection, and at least one longitudinal cut ( ) is made in an axial direction, extending in the area of the connection.

A temperature fuse for gas-generating mixtures consists of substances or mixtures of substances that have lower detonation points or decomposition points than the gas-generating mixture. In particular, the temperature fuse contains substances or mixtures of substances that thermally decompose exothermically in a narrowly restricted temperature range. The evolution of heat that results ignites the gas-generating mixture.

The current invention treats .alpha.-octogene which, with the aid of a new procedure, has been coated with synthetic materials in such a manner that it does not convert into .beta.-octogene at room temperature The coating is done at temperatures between 30.degree. and 60.degree. C. from an aqueous slurry; this causes granulates to form which can be heated to temperatures of 100.degree. C. without a rearrangement to .beta.-octogene to occur; even a grain growth does not take place. The granulates according to the invention are pourable and can be easily dosaged. .beta.-octogene can be coated in the same manner, particularly if it is coated as very fine grain of less than 50 .mu.m according to the invention. Thus, the current invention includes also the particularly fine .beta.-octogene, coated according to the current procedure, which shows the same properties as the required .alpha.-octogene.

A gas-producing material for a gas generator, particularly for a belt tightener or for an inflatable impact cushion (airbag) to protect motor vehicle occupants, containing a liquefied gas mixture in which the liquefied gas components consist of a mixture of one or more ethers, olefins, ammonia or hydrogen and nitrous oxide (N.sub.2 O).

Combustible cartridge shells have cylindrical walls formed of combustible material. The walls comprise one or more wraps or windings of textile fibers, which are bound together with bonding agents having propellant charge characteristics. The bonding agents comprise either a mixture of polymers and explosives with decomposition temperatures above 180.degree. C. or a mixture of polymeric nitro-aromatic compounds which have two or more nitro groups per aromatic nucleus and also have a decomposition temperature above 180.degree. C. Mixtures of these two bonding agents may also be used to form the cylindrical wall of the combustible cartridge shell. The cartridge shells have inherently stable walls with a high mechanical resistance and are unaffected by changes in temperature up to 240.degree. C. Advantageously, these shells burn practically free of any residuals.

A method for producing porous propellant charges from a mixture containing a propellant and a filler is described wherein a propellant having a decomposition temperature above 200.degree. C. is employed with a thermally removable filler to provide the charge forming mixture. The mixture is molded into a charge body and is subsequently heated to remove the filler at a temperature that is at least 50.degree. C. below the decomposition temperature of the propellant. Due to the heating at the elevated temperature the filler is wholly or in part removed to form a cavity within the charge body.

Method for preparation of porous propellants

A method for producing a caseless propellant charge is disclosed wherein a polynitro polymer having an aromatic or heterocyclic ring is employed as a binder with a solvent and a propellant to produce an admixture and the admixture is molded into a shaped charge body.

Polymer nitroaromatic compounds as propellants

An electrically primable igniter charge yield has a composition that yields a reduced proportion of toxic vapors after the deflagration. The composition of the charges contains, as the oxidizing agent, zinc peroxide and, as a component providing additional energy, initiating explosives of the kind which do not trigger a detonation in direct contact with press-molded elements of nitrocellulose propellant charge powders. Among these initiating exposives are the potassium salts of trinitrophenol or trinitroresorcinol. The components of the igniter charges are mixed with fibers of an electrically conductive material. Suitable conductive materials are carbon or metals, such as iron or copper, or metal alloys, such as brass, for example. The igniter charges furthermore contain a binder which is preferably a secondary explosive, such as, for example, nitrocellulose.

A process for producing fine-grained .beta.-HMX wherein a solution of .beta.-HMX is treated in a .gamma.-lactone in a temperature range of between 5.degree. and 15.degree. C. with toluene, and the desired fine and very pure .beta.-HMX crystals are precipitated. The resultant crystals have grain sizes of down to 5 .mu.m and exhibit an extremely small proportion of other modifications or forms of HMX. An additional aspect of the process resides in providing the very fine .beta.-HMX with a coating of a thermoplastic polymer. In this procedure, the .beta.-HMX particles, after having been separated from toluene, are made into a slurry in water and combined under agitation at temperatures of between 25.degree. and 60.degree. C. with a solution or suspension or emulsion of the thermoplastic polymer. During this step, granules are formed which can be separated after distillation of the solvent.

Process for producing fine-grained .beta.-HMX

A nucleus-nitrated aryl ether is produced by reacting an aromatic halogen-containing nitro compound with an aromatic hydroxy compound, which may be nitrated in the presence of a base. The ether may be an oligomer compound or a polymer and is suitable for use as an explosive or propellant charge.

Nitrated aryl ethers

A primer charge containing an oxidizing agent and an initiating explosive. The charge contains as the oxidant zinc peroxide and as the initiating explosive diazodinitrophenol and/or a strontium salt of mono- and/or dinitrodihydroxydiazobenzene. In correspondence with the content of the strontium salt employed, the charge can also be utilized with low tamping; alternatively, such tamping can be selected at will. The charge is furthermore distinguished by lead-free and barium-free combustion products so that the charge does not exhibit the properties which make the heretofore known primer charges deleterious to the health of humans.

A process for promoting the oxidation of an explosive-containing mixture or a pyrotechnical mixture involves utilizing zinc peroxide as the sole or predominant oxidant in the mixture. Preferably the zinc peroxide has an available oxygen content of more than 12.3% by weight.
