Disclosed is an optical fiber cable that includes a main tube. A guide tube, which includes at least one optical element, is positioned within the main tube's central space. A compressible element is also positioned within the main tube's central space. To reduce the adverse effects of ice formation within the optical fiber cable, the compressible element more readily deforms than do the guide tube and main tube. Also disclosed is a method for modifying a conventional optical fiber cable with a compressible element according to the present invention.

The present invention relates to loose tube optical waveguide fiber cable which is optimized for easy and fast installation as plenum cable, such as in customer premises for FTTH (fiber to the home) applications. One of the objects of the present invention is to provide a loose tube optical waveguide fiber cable which is suitable for fixed in-house cabling at extremely low-cost for a large-scale installation of FTTH.

The present invention relates to a loose tube optical waveguide fiber cable that is suitable for riser or plenum applications. The cable includes a protective tube that loosely surrounds two or more optical waveguides inside the hollow cavity defined by the tube. The protective tube has an inner surface and an outer surface and is a dry structure. Accordingly, the protective tube does not contain any gel-like compounds or other materials around the optical fibers positioned inside the protective tube. Strengthening members are disposed between the inner surface of the protective tube and the outer surface of the protective tube. The strengthening members are configured as embedded or layered strengthening elements and are disposed longitudinally along the length of the cable.

A method of installing a cable or conduit into at least one plastic pipe of a fluid carrying pipeline system, comprises attaching a first saddle fitting at a first location on said plastic pipe by electro-fusion, opening the pipe at the first location, introducing the cable or a pull body through the saddle fitting into the pipe towards a second location or retrieving at least part of the cable or a pull body introduced at a second location, and pulling the cable directly or by means of the pull body through the pipe. For the purpose of repairing supply lines such as a waste-water pipe, a plastic hose has been developed which, in the clear state, has a diameter which is the same size as, or larger than, the diameter of the pipe in which it is to be inserted. This plastic hose is used to fix optical or electric cables against the inner wall of the pipe. For this purpose, the plastic hose is introduced into the waste-water pipe in a collapsed state, together with the cable, and is released when the desired positioning has been reached. The collapsed plastic hose will then regain its original shape and thereby fix the cable against the inner wall of the waste-water pipe.
