A monitoring and/or control device for an environmental control unit such as a heat pump determines the performance status and whether maintenance is required of a component of the unit for example a compressor during operation of the component. The device includes sensors configured to be situated relative to the compressor so as to receive and signal data from the compressor during operation of the component. In some embodiments, the device includes a vibration detector and a controller coupled to the vibration detector. The controller is configured to (i) receive electrical signals from the vibration detector, (ii) compare the electrical signals to a reference signal, (iii) determine the performance characteristic of the component based on the results of the comparison, and (iv) output a signal corresponding to the performance characteristic of the component to a user display. The controller may also request maintenance and/or order parts automatically.

In a method for detecting combustion misses in cylinders of a combustion engine in part-engine operation in which only some of the cylinders are operated by the injection of fuel, a positional angle of the crankshaft is assigned to an angle segment; each angle segment is assigned to the particular cylinder which predominantly provides the torque for moving the crankshaft through the angle segment; an irregular running datum is determined as a function of a difference of segment pass-through times of immediately successive angle segments; and a combustion miss is detected if the irregular running datum exceeds or undershoots a limit value. In part-engine operation, the irregular running datum is determined only for two successive angle segments that are assigned to a combusting cylinder and to a non-combusting cylinder.

Method for switching between operating modes of an internal combustion engine having a plurality of control units

A method and device for diagnosing a crankcase ventilation of an internal combustion engine, which enable a diagnosis of a malfunction of an actuator of the crankcase ventilation. The internal combustion engine has at least two cylinder banks to which the crankcase ventilation is supplied, and an actuator is provided via whose position the distribution of the crankcase ventilation to the at least two cylinder banks is influenced. In a first position of the actuator, a different distribution of the crankcase ventilation to the at least two cylinder banks comes about than in a second position of the actuator that differs therefrom. Given simultaneously activated operation of the at least two cylinder banks, the actuator is switched over at least one between the two different positions. For at least one of the at least two cylinder banks, a characteristic variable of the internal combustion engine influenced by the crankcase ventilation is determined prior to and following the switchover operation. A minimum value for a change in the characteristic variable of at least one of the at least two cylinder banks and/or the ratio of the characteristic variable between the at least two cylinder banks is specified for the switchover-related change in the distribution of the crankcase ventilation to the at least two cylinder banks. A malfunction of the actuator is detected if at least one change derived from the ascertained values for the characteristic variable undershoots its assigned expected minimum value in quantitative terms.

Method and device for diagnosing a crankcase ventilation of an internal combustion engine
