The light-radiating semiconductor component has a radiation-emitting semiconductor body and a luminescence conversion element. The semiconductor body emits radiation in the ultraviolet, blue and/or green spectral region and the luminescence conversion element converts a portion of the radiation into radiation of a longer wavelength. This makes it possible to produce light-emitting diodes which radiate polychromatic light, in particular white light, with only a single light-emitting semiconductor body. A particularly preferred luminescence conversion dye is YAG:Ce.

The wavelength-converting casting composition is based on a transparent epoxy casting resin with a luminous substance admixed. The composition is used in an electroluminescent component having a body that emits ultraviolet, blue or green light. An inorganic luminous substance pigment powder with luminous substance pigments is dispersed in the transparent epoxy casting resin. The luminous substance is a powder of garnets, thiogallates, aluminates, or orthosilicates doped with rare earths, and preferably Ce-doped phosphors. The luminous substance pigments have particle sizes &lE;20 &mgr;m and a mean grain diameter d &lE;5 &mgr;M.

Wavelength-converting casting composition and white light-emitting semiconductor component

The wavelength-converting casting composition is based on a transparent epoxy casting resin with a luminous substance admixed. The composition is used in an electroluminescent component having a body that emits ultraviolet, blue or green light. An inorganic luminous substance pigment powder with luminous substance pigments is dispersed in the transparent epoxy casting resin. The luminous substance is a powder of Ce-doped phosphors and the luminous substance pigments have particle sizes &lE;20 &mgr;m and a mean grain diameter d &lE;5 &mgr;m.

A composition comprises from 60-98 weight percent of a casting resin such as an epoxy resin, from 2-30 weight percent of an alcohol or sugar such as 3 (4), 8 (9)-bis(hydroxymethyl)tricyclo&lsqb;5.2.1.0,&rsqb;decane, from 0.2 to 2.0 weight percent of a thermal initiator such as an onium salt, from 0.2-2.0 weight percent of a bonding agent such as 3-glycidyloxypropyltrimethoxysilane, from 0-3.0 weight percent of a flow improver, from 0.2-5.0 weight percent of a metal complex with an organic ligand such as an amino acid, acetate, carbonic acid, amine and acetylacetonate including zinc di-(2-ethylhexanoate) and from 0-4 weight percent of a thixotropic agent and/or a flow modifier.

Method of producing a wavelength-converting casting composition

An epoxysiloxane condensate is modified by means of an in situ reaction with an organic compound, which is di-functional or multifunctional if warranted. By means of the disclosed method, the characteristics of epoxysiloxane condensates, epoxy resin mixtures, epoxy resin formulations and molded bodies manufactured therefrom can be varied easily and economically.
