The invention relates to an apparatus for coating a metal strip passed through a container which holds the melted coating material. A channel is connected to the container which encloses the material in the form of a strip beneath the melt bath level. Channel currents are induced in the coating material by means of inductors and cause an electromagnetic force in order to hold the coating material back. The channel is attached to the base of the container such that it is easily detachable and comprises a plurality of parts which can be separated in the strip running direction, are sealed with respect to one another and can individually be moved away from the strip, transversely with respect to the strip running direction, to replace the channel with the strip located in it, after releasing the separation connection.

The invention is directed to a process and apparatus for coating the surf of elongated materials, in particular steel strips, with a metallic coating. The material is guided in one direction through a tank holding the molten coating material. The tank has a through-duct surrounded by an electric field below the surface of the molten bath. An electromagnetic force is generated in the region where the through-duct opens into the melt, which electromagnetic force is equal to or greater than the metallostatic pressure, directed oppositely thereto vectorially and quantitatively proportional to the product of the cross-sectional area of the inlet opening and the metallostatic pressure, and in which the dwell of the strip in the melt can be controlled independently of the rate of feed of the strip. The molten is constantly moved against the surface of the elongated material while the elongated material passes through it; and the molten material is circulated in a closed system, without contact to oxygen in the atmosphere.

In an installation for the manufacture of hot-rolled steel strip from continuously cast stock, a caster for the continuous casting of the stock into steel strip, a furnace positioned for receiving the strip after it leaves the caster and containing at least two winding/unwinding mandrels each placed in first and second proximate locations, respectively, the first mandrel is placed in the first location adapted to receive and wind the strip into a coil, transport devices are provided for transporting the coil and first mandrel from the first location to a second location and the second mandrel from the second location to the first location; the strip is unwound from the first mandrel in said second location and then fed to a mill. Alternative embodiments include vertical or horizontal movement of the mandrels, more than two mandrels, devices for driving the mandrels at different speeds, cutting means, clamping devices, furnace heating devices, dividing shears and descaling.

Cold rolled steel strip is uncoiled, cleaned, and passed into an annealing furnace, wherein the strip is heated to and held at a relatively hot temperature, subsequently quenched, and coiled; after a period of storage the strip passes through the same equipment but now including additional pickling for removing an oxide layer, and the strip passes through the annealing furnace a second time, while operating said annealing furnace for heating to and holding at a lower temperature to obtain aging; thereafter the strip is coiled again.

Continuously cast thin slab ingots are coiled, cut, uncoiled and rolled down to thin strip material. For a single casting line a single back and forth rolling stand is used; multiple continuous casting lines can service a single unidirectional rolling mill. The rolling temperature is attained by heat retention in the coils.
