The invention provides an antibody or a fragment thereof having specific binding affinity for superficial zone protein (SZP) or a variant, fragment, or protein core thereof, wherein the binding affinity of the antibody or fragment thereof for human superficial zone protein is the same or greater than the binding affinity for bovine superficial zone protein in a competitive binding assay, IAsys analysis, or BIAcore analysis. The present invention further provides hybidoma cells that produce the monoclonal antibody and antibody reagent kits comprising the antibody or fragment of the invention. Further provided by the invention are methods of SZP detection, methods of diagnosing a degenerative joint condition, and screening methods related to the use of the antibody or fragment thereof.

Superficial zone protein-binding molecules and uses thereof

A method and system for detecting an image of an object, particularly a soft tissue material. A generated x-ray beam is transmitted through the soft tissue material. A transmitted beam is directed at an angle of incidence upon a crystal analyzer. An image of the object is detected from a beam diffracted from the crystal analyzer either at or near a peak of a rocking curve of the crystal analyzer. The method and system of this invention is particularly useful for analyzing images of cartilage.

The protein has a molecular weight of 10,000-30,000 Dalton, an isoelectric point greater than 9.5, and an N terminus of the sequence H-Lys-X-Phe-Lys-Val-Asp-Val-Leu-Ala-Ala-Leu-X-Phe-Asn-Ala-, wherein X is an amino acid or a tryptic cleavage product which has the sequence -Gly-Ala-Asn-Ala-Val-Asn-. Methods for the isolation and purification of the protein, compositions containing the protein, and methods for the use of the protein and compositions, are also disclosed.

Cartilage-derived leukocyte elastase-inhibitor

Chondrocytes are cultured to produce cartilage tissue from which an anti-invasion factor (AIF) may be recovered. Mammalian cartilage providing at least about 60% viable chondrocytes is enzymatically digested to denude the cells of their extracellular matrix. The denuded cells are plated at high density and cultured to produce cartilage tissue.
