Use of tasteless, hydrolyzed collagen and agent containing the same

A novel biodegradable, water-resistant polymer material which can be produced with defined material properties is suggested, in particular in the form of foils, films, strips, masses, molded articles or the like, this material consisting essentially of a product of the cross-linking reaction of polysaccharides and/or polypeptides, the hydroxyl, amino, imino, thiol and/or carboxyl groups of which are derivatized at least partially in a non-radical reaction with agents which include groups cross-linkable in a process step following the derivatization and separate therefrom.

A process for making gelatine films, in particular sheet gelatine, from powdered gelatine includes the following steps: The powdered gelatine with the addition of water is plasticized by the application of shearing forces at an elevated pressure and an elevated temperature, the plasticized mass is pressed in the form of a film through a slotted die, the film is drawn off the slotted die under tension and the taut film is dried.

In a foodstuff, the salt content present as such therein and imparting the flavor thereto is reduced by up to 50% by weight, without noticeable detriment to the flavor, by adding collagen hydrolysate.

Gelatine granules obtained by plasticizing conventional gelatine consist of solid gelatine particles with a water content of from 1 to 12% by weight, with a particle size of from 0.1 to 10 mm, with an entrapped air content of less than 1% by volume and with a melt flow index greater than 1 g/10 min at 110 degrees C. The granules are thermoplastic and solid or hollow molded articles can be made from them like from conventional plastics by extrusion, injection molding, blow molding and the like.
