In a method for controlling an internal combustion engine () for a motor vehicle in stop-start operation, the internal combustion engine () is operated in the idling operating state. If there is a request for switch-off of the internal combustion engine () the torque produced by the internal combustion engine () is reduced while fuel continues to be injected. The fuel injection is switched off if the speed of the internal combustion engine () reaches a predetermined minimum value. The torque produced by the internal combustion engine () is increased again if the request for switching off the internal combustion engine () is canceled before the minimum speed is reached.

In a lower partial load range of, a setpoint value of the mass flow of air into the combustion chambers is determined as a function of a predefined torque request such that it is greater than necessary for implementing the predefined torque request and large enough that individual exhaust packets can be differentiated from one another with the exhaust gas probe. An internal combustion engine has an intake duct, at least one cylinder that takes in air via the intake duct and an exhaust gas duct, in which the exhaust gas catalytic converter is located, and into which the combusted air/fuel mixture is ejected from at least one cylinder. Depending on measurement values that are determined by sensors, input signals for the control of actuators of the internal combustion engine are generated by means of control functions based on torsional moment and by means of a dynamic charging model of the intake duct. A measurement is determined, which characterizes the difference of a desired air mass flow into the respective cylinder from an actual air mass flow into the cylinder. Depending on the measurement, a proper or improper heating up of the exhaust gas catalytic converter is identified.

The internal combustion engine has at least two partly separate exhaust systems in each of which are disposed a catalytic converter, and upstream thereof, a lambda probe. During the starting phase of an internal combustion engine with fuel injection so-called pilot injectors (I) are used to establish a film on the cylinder walls and at the same time to provide an ignitable mixture for the first combustion. This comparison gives a deviation value which is characteristic of the deviation between the two values, and the deviation value is used to decide whether sensor balancing is required and indeed possible. If sensor balancing is required and possible, the values of the output signals from the ozone sensors are compared with a threshold value and depending on the result of this comparison either an additive or a multiplicative correction of the values of the output signals is performed.

The weighted variable is compared with a predetermined threshold value, and, if the threshold value is exceeded, it is concluded that the conversion capacity of the radiator is insufficient.

A correction factor takes into account the possible change in the quality of the fuel fed to an internal combustion engine between shut-down and restarting of the internal combustion engine. The correction factor is applied to the basic injection time period in the internal combustion engine. The correction factor is weighted with a weighting factor that is selected as a function of the filling level of a fuel reservoir container holding the fuel when the internal combustion engine is shut down, and of the filling level when the internal combustion engine is restarted.

The tank venting system is evacuated by the negative pressure prevailing in the intake pipe of the internal combustion engine. A regression calculation, based on a physical model which simulates the pressure variation in the event of a leak in the tank venting system, on the basis of a gas mass flow flowing through an opening, supplies a parameter which describes the curve variation of the pressure during the test for gassing out fuel and during the diagnosis. The parameter contains the information about the leak area and takes into account external influences that interfere with the signal evaluation.

A method for avoiding misdetection in a diagnosis of a tank venting system for a motor vehicle includes deriving a statement about a fill level of a fuel tank by evaluating a signal of a pressure sensor in the tank venting system. To that end, prior to the diagnosis of the tank venting system, the pressure fluctuations are detected and compared with a threshold value. If the pressure fluctuations exceed the threshold value, then a conclusion is drawn that the fuel tank is full, and the diagnosis is not enabled.
