Mixtures of fuorescent whitening agents comprising 5 to 45 parts by weight of 4,4'-bis(cyanovinyl)stilbene and 95 to 55 parts by weight of a compound of formula ##STR1## and the use of said mixtures and compositions containing them for whitening polyester fibres and textile material containing polyester fibres.

Stilbene derivatives of the formula ##STR1## wherein X is chlorine or bromine, R.sub.1 is hydrogen, carboxyl, cyano, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 -alkyl or a non-chromophorically esterified carboxyl group, and R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 independently of one another are each hydrogen, unsubstituted or non-chromophorically substituted C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 -alkyl or C.sub.3 -C.sub.4 -alkenyl, or a non-chromophoric substituent of the 2nd order. They are valuable intermediates for producing optical brighteners of the 4,4'-disubstituted stilbene series.

A composition for protecting keratin material, in particular woolen textiles, against attack by keratin pests, in particular moth and beetle larvae, which contains a specifically substituted 5-phenylcarbamoylbarbituric acid or a salt thereof and a synthetic pyrethroid as the active compound combination, is described, as well as a process, using the said active compound combination, for imparting a finish to the said material against attack by keratin pests.

An azo compound free of sulphonic acid groups, of the formula ##SPC1## Wherein B is the radical of a coupling component of the phenol or naphthol, pyrazolone, pyridone, aminopyrazole, enolisable keto compound or alkylaniline series and Y is a sulphur atom or a nitrogen atom, R represents a hydrocarbon radical or a hydrogen atom, and n =1 or 2, n being 1 if Y= --S-- and n being 2 if Y= --N=, and wherein the ring D can carry yet further substituents and the dyestuff molecule contains at least one carboxyl group, and useful in dyeing and printing leather, wool, silk and synthetic fibers such as acrylic, acrylonitrile, polyamide and especially aromatic polyester fibers.

Benzisothiazole and indazole azo compounds

Azo dyestuffs containing at least one group of formula --X--CO--NR--SO.sub.2 aryl, wherein R is hydrogen alkyl or cycloalkyl and X is an oxygen or sulphur atom or a group of formula --NR.sub.1 --, wherein R.sub.1 is hydrogen alkyl or cycloalkyl. The dyestuffs dye polyester fibers in fast shades.

A process for dyeing and printing textile materials made of or containing fully synthetic hydrophobic linear polymers which are free from amino groups, wherein the material is padded with a dispersion dyestuff containing at least one carboxyl group, the padded textile material is dried and printed with an alkaline printing paste, the fabric is thermo-fixed and the salt of the dyestuff containing a carboxyl group is subsequently washed from the printed areas.
