A marine vessel power and propulsion system that provides a vessel-wide uninterruptible power supply is described. The power and propulsion system includes a propulsion system including a prime mover coupled to a motor/generator and a propulsion device. The motor/generator is configured to be driven by the prime mover and to generate alternating current (AC) electric power. The power and propulsion system also includes a ship-service electrical system including a generator set and a ship-service bus. The generator set is configured to generate ship-service electric power for distribution over the ship-service bus. The power and propulsion system also includes a bi-directional converter configured to couple the propulsion system to the ship-service electrical system and to convert AC electric power generated by the propulsion system to ship-service electric power for distribution over the ship-service electrical system.

Systems and methods for providing an uninterruptible power supply to a ship-service bus of a marine vessel

A method for using an aerodynamic stability management system is disclosed. The method includes placing at least one pressure sensor in a compressor, the at least one pressure sensor communicating with an aerodynamic stability management system controller and monitoring gas turbine engine performance using the aerodynamic stability management system controller. The controller includes a memory, an input/output interface and a processor. The method also includes defining a correlation threshold value and calculating a correlation measure using a plurality of pressure signals generated by the at least one pressure sensor and comparing the correlation measure with the correlation threshold value. When the correlation measure is less than the correlation threshold value a corrective action is implemented.

Method and apparatus for an aerodynamic stability management system

A system for transferring torque between a pair of independently, concurrently rotating shafts of a turbofan engine includes a magnetic gearbox. The magnetic gearbox has a first ring structure, a second ring structure and an intermediate ring structure. Each ring structure has an annular aperture therethrough and a plurality of permanent magnets embedded therein. The intermediate ring structure is disposed between the first and the second ring structures. Each ring structure is coaxially concentric with, and independently rotatable with respect to the remaining ring structures. The first and second ring structures are each coupled to separate ones of the rotating engine shafts, and the intermediate ring is operable to transfer torque between the pair of shafts. Preferably, the intermediate ring structure is coupled to a rotating machine. The rotating machine has a controller, and is operable for adjusting a ratio of torque transferred between the pair of shafts.

Marine propulsion system and method of operating the same

An electromagnetic machine that generates electric power from an engine by having rotor poles on the tips of the fan blade airfoils and stator elements circumferentially placed around the blade airfoils. As the pole tips on the blade airfoils are excited, they rotate past the stator elements, causing a magnetic flux change in the stator. The magnetic flux change results in an electric potential that is used to provide power.

An inside out generator disposed aft of the low-pressure turbine spool to generate power for the electrical demands of an aircraft system. The low-pressure turbine discharge flow is used to drive the power turbine, which is coupled to the generator. The generator is able to extract power at idle conditions of the aircraft engine from ducting the discharge through the inside out generator. The system eliminates the placement of a generator in the hot gas path of the discharge, and enables the injection of power directly to the accessory gear box of the engine.

An exemplary embodiment of the invention is directed to a control system for controlling an engine. The control system includes a schedule memory for storing a schedule representing target values for a controlled variable. The control system also includes a processor coupled to the schedule memory. The processor receives a reference input and generates a control signal in response to the reference input and the schedule. The schedule in the schedule memory may be updated to account for engine deterioration so that accurate control is performed. Another exemplary embodiment of the invention is a method for controlling an engine. The method includes updating a schedule to account for deterioration of the engine.

The invention comprises a switched reluctance machine including a stator and a rotor wherein the stator includes stator teeth wound with separately excitable phase windings. The separately excitable phase windings receiving a combination of signals wherein the first of those signals is a phase winding signal and the second of those signals is a magnetic bearing signal. A method of controlling a switched reluctance machine wherein the switched reluctance machine includes separately excitable stator windings. The method comprising the steps of exciting each stator winding with a signal representative of the phase excitation for that winding and superimposing on each of said windings a signal capable of producing the magnetic force necessary to support the rotor in the absence of a mechanical bearing.
