Provided is a mercury adsorbent that can efficiently adsorb and remove mercury and/or a mercury compound contained in a liquid hydrocarbon and can suppress corrosive action even when used for a long time. The mercury adsorbent comprises an activated carbon including a mineral acid supported thereon, the activated carbon having a specific surface area of 1000 m/g or larger and a volume of micropores of 80 cm/g or larger, each of the micropores having a pore radius of 8 Å or smaller, and the mercury adsorbent has a moisture content of from 0.1 to 3 wt %.

The object can be solved by a method for manufacturing a carbonaceous material having an average diameter of 3 to 30 &#x3bc;m, for a negative electrode of lithium ion capacitors comprising the steps of: (1) heating plant-derived char having an average particle diameter of 100 to 10000 &#x3bc;m at 500&#xb0; C. to 1250&#xb0; C. under an inert gas atmosphere containing a halogen compound to demineralize in a gas-phase, (2) pulverizing a carbon precursor obtained by the demineralization in a gas-phase, (3) calcining the pulverized carbon precursor at less than 1100&#xb0; C. under a non-oxidizing gas atmosphere.

There is provided a carbon material for polarizable electrodes in which a heterocyclic aromatic compound is adsorbed on an activated carbon, wherein the heterocyclic aromatic compound comprises a five- or six-membered ring having two or more nitrogen atoms as ring-forming atoms; a ratio (N/C) of nitrogen atoms to carbon atoms in the heterocyclic aromatic compound is 0.4 or more; 1 to 35 parts by mass of the heterocyclic aromatic compound is adsorbed based on 100 parts by mass of the activated carbon; and the carbon material for polarizable electrodes has a benzene adsorption capacity of 25 to 75% by mass.

The electric double layer capacitor is made of an activated carbon obtained by activating a hard-to-graphitize material (for example, phenol resin) with water vapor, and the activated carbon has a median particle size within a range from 4 &#x3bc;m to 8 &#x3bc;m in the particle size distribution and at least a peak observed on the side of smaller particle size than the median particle size in the particle size distribution.
