A flexible coupling having vibration damping function against vibration in the direction of rotation. The coupling comprises an elastic body connecting inner and outer tube, drive and driven shafts attached to the inner and outer tube, a fluid chamber partitioned into two sections adjacent to each other in the rotational direction by a protrusion which diamentrically extends so that a narrow communication channel remains.

A plate spring is operatively connected to an automotive internal combustion engine so that when the engine vibrates with a relatively high frequency and small amplitude, the plate spring is merely moved backwards and forwards across an essentially flat home position wherein it exhibits a zero or even negative spring constant, and so that when the engine vibrates with a relatively low frequency and large amplitude, the spring is flexed to the degree of exhibiting a high spring constant and thus transmits the vibrational energy therethrough to a resilient body or unit interconnecting same with the vehicle chassis.

A vibration suppression system for a diesel engine comprises a first device for decreasing the amount of intake air to be inducted into the engine when operated. A second device is provided to heat the intake air when operated. Additionally, a third device is provided to detect a low engine speed and low engine load operating range, and to produce a signal in response thereto. The first and second devices are operated in response to the signal from the third device, thereby avoiding irregular combustion and misfire while suppressing engine speed fluctuation and torque fluctuation.

An internal combustion engine comprises a cylinder block rigidly connected to a transmission and having cylinder bores and bearing sections; and a bearing beam structure including main bearing cap sections each associating with each cylinder block bearing section to rotatably support a crankshaft, first and second beam sections securely connecting the main bearing cap sections with each other and extending parallelly with the crankshaft axis, the first and second beam sections being located spaced from each other and along the respective opposite side portions of each bearing cap section, and first and second connecting sections respectively integral with the first and second beam sections and being rigidly connected to the transmission, thereby preventing the bearing beam structure from its axial vibration while contributing to an improvement in rigidity of a power unit entire including the transmission.
