A storage system has a storage controller and a RAID group. The storage controller has policy management information such that one failure recovery process among a plurality of differing failure recovery processes is associated with each RAID group, and when an error in a command issued to a RAID group is detected, the failure recovery process associated with the RAID group to which the command was issued is specified on the basis of the policy management information, and the specified failure recovery process is executed.

Storage system and storage management method

A storage unit is provided with a plurality of sub storage units configured to include a plurality of hard disk drives, an enclosure, a printed wiring board, a power supply device, and a cable holder. The sub storage units each operate separately. The enclosure is provided in the array of the hard disk drives so that the distance can be shorter between the enclosure and each of the hard disk drives. With the provision of the cable holder, communications cables can be both brought closer to the printed wiring board. With such a configuration, the coupling point among the communications cables and the printed wiring board, and the enclosure can be favorably reduced. The resulting storage control apparatus can be mounted with a larger number of storage devices, thereby being able to maintain good signal quality.

Storage control apparatus

System for controlling data transfer between a host system and storage devices. A virtualization controller implements the data transfer and includes first ports for connection with the storage devices, a second port for connection with the host system, a processor, and a memory configured to store volume mapping information which correlates first identification information used by the host system to access a first storage area in one of the storage devices, with second identification information for identifying the first storage area, the correlation being used by the processor to access the first storage area. When data stored in the first storage area is transferred to a second storage area, the processor correlates the first identification information with a third identification information for identifying the second storage area and registers the first identification information and the third identification information in the volume mapping information.

Virtualization controller and data transfer control method

A storage unit is provided with a plurality of sub storage units configured to include a plurality of hard disk drives, an enclosure, a printed wiring board, a power supply device, and a cable holder. The sub storage units each operate separately. The enclosure is provided in the array of hard disk drives so that the distance can be shorter between the enclosure and each of the hard disk drives. A first free port present in a controller or a switch device is physically connected to a second free port present in a switch device (switch device in another storage device unit) other than the controller or switch device comprising the first free port. The possibility of logical connection via a physical path connecting the first free port and second free port is controlled.

Storage system effectively using free ports

The storage control device of the present invention reduces the power consumption amount by stopping the transmission of power to enclosures that are not accessed. A plurality of additional enclosures are switch-connected via backend switches to a base enclosure. Drives that have not been accessed for a predetermined time or more undergo spin-down. When all of the drives in the enclosure enter a spin-down state, the supply of power from the power supply in the enclosure to the respective drives is stopped. The base enclosure that manages the system constitution of the storage control device turns OFF the switch connected to the enclosure when all of the drives in a certain enclosure have spun down. The transmission of power to this enclosure is accordingly stopped.

Storage control device

With the storage control device of the present invention, it is possible to mount a larger number of storage devices and to cool them effectively. A plurality of sub-storage units are provided within one storage unit. Each sub-storage unit includes a plurality of hard disk drives, a plurality of enclosures, and a plurality of power supply devices. A cover is divided into a front cover which covers over the front side of a case, and a rear cover which covers over the rear side of the case. Shield portions are provided on the upper sides of the hard disk drives and the enclosures. By these shield portions contacting the adjacent modules (other disk drives and other enclosures), it is possible to reduce the negative influence upon cooling air draft passages within the case, even when a cover has been removed.

Embodiments of the present invention are directed to systems and methods of controlling data transfer between a host system and a plurality of storage devices. One embodiment is directed to a virtualization controller for controlling data transfer between a host system and a plurality of storage devices. The virtualization controller comprises a plurality of first ports for connection with the plurality of storage devices each having a storage area to store data; a second port for connection with the host system; a processor; and a memory configured to store volume mapping information which correlates first identification information used by the host system to access a first storage area in one of the storage devices, with second identification information for identifying the first storage area, the correlation being used by the processor to access the first storage area. When data stored in the first storage area is transferred to a second storage area in one of the storage devices, the processor correlates the first identification information with a third identification information for identifying the second storage area and registers the first identification information and the third identification information in the volume mapping information.

In a network regulated so that the unique identification information for a basic storage apparatus and that of each of a plurality of additional storage apparatuses do not overlap, the storage apparatuses can be connected to the network without being assigned unique identification information. The basic storage apparatus judges, when an additional storage apparatus is powered-on, whether or not an initial value is set in an identification information setting unit in the additional storage apparatus, the identification information setting unit being where unique identification information in the network is set. If it is judged that an initial value is set in the identification information setting unit, the basic storage apparatus enters a first mode in which it creates unique identification information, replaces the initial value with the created identification information, and recognizes the created identification information as unique identification information in the network. If it is judged that a value other than the initial value is set in the identification information setting unit, the basic storage apparatus recognizes that value as unique identification information in the network.

This invention provides a storage apparatus for inhibiting temperature increase in a chassis caused when a cooling fan or a module is detached and replaced due to the failure thereof. The storage apparatus comprises a controller for controlling data transfer, a power source supplying a power to a hard disk drive and the controller and having a fan, and a base chassis. The controller monitors a state of other controller and the power source, rotates the fan of the power source corresponding to the module in which a failure is detected at a first high speed higher than a normal rotational speed when detecting the failure of the other controller or the power source, and rotates the fan rotated at the first high speed at a second high speed higher than the first high speed when detecting the detachment of the module in which the failure is detected.

The storage system forces the management console to select an unused interface unit from among the plurality of interface units for use in a data input/output process between the server and the storage system, select a microprocessor unit which meets required performance of the server from among the plurality of microprocessor units for use in the data input/output process, and notify the administrator of the selected interface unit and microprocessor unit.
