A system and method for automatically tuning/configuring a power system stabilizer (PSS) in a power system digital excitation control system having an automatic voltage regulator (AVR) that includes providing a control input to the AVR as a function of generating a set of tuning PSS lead-lag phase compensation time constants as a function of received generated terminal voltages, generating an uncompensated frequency response as a function of the received set of generated terminal voltages and using particle swarm optimization (PSO) as a function of the generated uncompensated frequency response, generating a tuning PSS gain value as a function of a determined open loop frequency response of the power system, determining a PSS gain margin, determining a tuning PSS gain; and transmitting the determined set of tuning phase compensation time constants and the determined tuning PSS gain value to the control interface of the PSS.

The present system and method provides a cross-current compensation control system that provides for improved load sharing performance during the parallel operation of multiple generators through use of a Proportional Integral PI controller or a Proportional Integral Differential PID controller eliminating steady state error in reactive current sharing, with such providing a stable and robust response with uncertain variations of equipment in the power system through improved cross-current compensation when various system parameter uncertainties exist.

Advanced cross current compensation system and method for enhancing reactive current sharing in power generation having multiple generators

An integrated control system and method which improves load application/rejection performance for diesel generating sets is disclosed. Feedback-linearizing control is used for voltage regulation, which removes interaction between automatic voltage regulation and speed regulation. A proper feed-forward signal is sent to the governor using load anticipation control. The integrated control reduces engine speed and voltage deviations. It is implemented in the voltage regulator, since it recognizes load changes before the engine. The integrated control helps the engine anticipate throttle adjustments in advance of load being recognized by the engine. Test results show an improvement in engine speed recovery after a large increase or decrease in load.

A method, system and computer software for detecting an incipient failure of a generator in a power system including the steps of ascertaining one or more generator reference parameter of the generator for use as a baseline reference; measuring one or more operating parameter values of the generator; using the one or more operating parameter values to solve for an estimated present value of the one or more of the generator's current performance parameters using particle swarm optimization technique; and determining whether the estimated present values of the one or more of the generator's current performance parameters are outside of an acceptable limit.

A method, system and computer software for providing a load anticipation feature for a diesel generating set including a diesel engine, a generator, a speed governor, and an automatic voltage regulator generator in a power system and computer data processor apparatus and computer executable instructions for ascertaining an equivalent linear speed control system whose response approximately matches the non-linear speed response of the diesel generating set; ascertaining at least one programmable parameter of the load anticipation feature based on a real power load applied to the diesel generating set and a desired speed response of the linear speed control system; generating a control output based on a measured real power load and at least one programmable parameter of the load anticipation feature; the speed governor receiving the control output and adjusting the speed of the diesel engine based on the control output.

System and method for a load anticipation feature and its tuning method for a generating set

A system and method of use for self-tuning a PID controller utilized with an exciter and generator is disclosed. The system includes a power source, an exciter electrically connected to the power source, a generator that is electrically energized by the exciter, and a processor that provides a PID controller that calculates an estimated exciter time constant and an estimated generator time constant using particle swarm optimization ('PSO') to control exciter field voltage. The particle swarm optimization ('PSO') technique includes increasing the voltage reference by a predetermined percentage over a predetermined time period, initializing each particle position of exciter time constant and generator time constant, calculating generator voltage, performing a fitness evaluation and then obtaining and updating best values. This is followed by repeating the steps of determining the generator voltage, the fitness evaluation, and the best values over a predetermined number of iterations.
