In drying coal to be used as fuel for a coal-fired boiler, the coal is dried at a temperature of 80 to 150&#xb0; C. by using combustion exhaust gas having passed through an air heater for the coal-fired boiler. Moreover, after medium-quality or low-quality coal is heated to a temperature of 300 to 500&#xb0; C. at a heating rate of not less than 100&#xb0; C. per minute and then cooled to a temperature of 250&#xb0; C. or below at a cooling rate of not less than 50&#xb0; C. per minute, the resulting reformed coal is cooled to a temperature of 70&#xb0; C. or below and stored for 1 month or more in a state of isolation from the atmosphere. In producing the aforesaid reformed coal, the medium-quality or low-quality coal is heated by using combustion exhaust gas obtained at the outlet of an economizer included in the coal-fired boiler equipment or at the outlet of a denitrator included therein.

Coal drying method and equipment, method for aging reformed coal and aged reformed coal, and process and system for producing reformed coal

In drying coal to be used as fuel for a coal-fired boiler, the coal is dried at a temperature of 80 to 150.degree. There is provided a process for the heat treatment of coal which comprises heating and drying low grade coal such as subbituminous coal and brown coal containing less than 80% of carbon and more than 33% of volatile matter (dry mineral matter-free basis) and having a high moisture content and a particle diameter smaller than 2 inches, with a high-temperature gas containing less than 5% of oxygen in a fluidized bed for 2-10 minutes until the coal temperature reaches 180.degree.-400.degree. C., and subsequently cooling the coal by spraying water in a fluidized bed for 2-10 minutes until the coal temperature decreases to 60.degree. C. or below at which time the coal holds the maximum moisture given by wetting. The heating process may be performed in two steps, in which case coal is heated with a high-temperature gas to 80.degree.-150.degree. C. in the first step so that the moisture of coal is reduced below the inherent moisture. The cooling process may be performed in two steps, in which case heated coal is rapidly cooled to about 120.degree. C. with a cooling gas of high steam content in the first step.

There is here disclosed a calcining apparatus for a powdery material comprising a first preheating series composed of a calcining kiln and preheaters at a plurality of stages for heating the powdery material with an exhaust gas from the calcining kiln, a second preheating series composed of other preheaters at a plurality of stages for heating the powdery material with an exhaust gas from a rotary kiln, and a gas carrying pipe for connecting the first and second prehating series in the middle thereof, a flow path for the powdery material being adapted so that the powdery material fed to each series may be led into the rotary kiln via a combining duct disposed in front of the undermost preheaters in both the series and then via the undermost portions of both the series. Further, disclosed is a calcining apparatus for a powdery material in which a sub-calcining kiln and a calcining chamber are disposed on an exhaust gas pipe extending from a rotary kiln. Still futher, disclosed is a calcining apparatus for a powdery material in which a calcining chamber is disposed, and a flow path through which the powdery material fed to first and second preheating series passes is provided with a powdery material carrying pipe for connecting both series in front of the second preheaters from the bottom in both series, and is further provided with a combining duct for combining powdery materials from both series in the rear of the second preheaters from the bottom in both series.

There is here disclosed a calcining apparatus for a powdery material comprising a first preheating series composed of a calcining kiln and preheaters at a plurality of stages for heating the powdery material with an exhaust gas from the calcining kiln, a second preheating series composed of other preheaters at a plurality of stages for heating the powdery material with an exhaust gas from a rotary kiln, and a gas carrying pipe for connecting the first and second preheating series in the middle thereof, a flow path for the powdery material being adapted so that the powdery material fed to each series may be led into the rotary kiln via a combining duct disposed in front of the undermost preheaters in both the series and then via the undermost portions of both the series. Further, disclosed is a calcining apparatus for a powdery material in which a sub-calcining kiln and a calcining chamber are disposed on an exhaust gas pipe extending from a rotary kiln. Still further, disclosed is a calcining apparatus for a powdery material in which a calcining chamber is disposed, and a flow path through which the powdery material fed to first and second preheating series passes is provided with a powdery material carrying pipe for connecting both the series in front of the second preheaters from the bottom in both the series, and is further provided with a combining duct for combining powdery materials from both the series in the rear of the second preheaters from the bottoms in both the series.

In a process for heat treatment, highly hygroscopic coal, with a low carbon content and large equilibrium moisture, is rapidly heated with hot gas at a rate of temperature rise of at least 100.degree. C./min up to a final heating temperature in the range of 300.degree.-500.degree. C., and is then rapidly cooled at a rate of temperature drop of at least 50.degree. C./min to 250.degree. C. or below. As the hot gas, an inert gas whose oxygen concentration is not higher than 4% by volume is employed. The hot gas is either caused to contain not less than 20% by volume of steam or composed solely of the steam.

A process and apparartus for gasifying coal or other carbon containing material in which at least a gas stream communicates which comprises providing a fluidizing bed reaction chamber disposed upstream and a jet-system reaction chamber disposed downstream, providing means for supplying an object of gasification such as coal and a gasifying agent in said jet-system reaction chamber, providing a dust removing device at the exit flue of said jet-system reaction chamber, said fluidizing bed reaction chamber having a system of supplying collected solid of said dust removing device, means for supplying a gasifying agent and means for taking out ashes.
