A metallic support catalyst includes a honeycomb body, an outer cylinder and a catalyst ingredient loading layer, and has a geometric surface area of 40 cm.sup.2 /g or more with respect to its unit weight. The honeycomb body is formed of a flat metallic foil and a corrugated metallic foil, which are laminated and formed as a roll so as to form a plurality of honeycomb-shaped cells in the honeycomb body. The outer cylinder holds the honeycomb body therein. The catalyst ingredient loading layer is coated on the honeycomb-shaped cells of the honeycomb body. The honeycomb body can be formed of a flat metallic foil and a corrugated metallic foil, which have a thickness of from 0.02 to 0.04 mm. The catalyst ingredient loading layer can have a weight of from 60 to 150 g/liter with respect to a unit volume of said honeycomb body.

Metallic support catalyst

A tandem support structure for an exhaust gas purifying catalyst comprises a sleeve, a first honeycomb disposed on an upstream side of exhaust gases, and a second honeycomb disposed on a downstream side of exhaust gases at a position axially separated from the first honeycomb. The second honeycomb is fixed to the sleeve, and the first honeycomb is held by a holding member which axially extends in an upstream direction from said second honeycomb, without contacting the sleeve. Since an air layer exists between the first honeycomb and the sleeve, heat radiation from the first honeycomb is prevented and temperature rising characteristics of the first honeycomb are improved.

Support structure for an exhaust gas purifying catalyst

A forced cooling casting apparatus has a loop track for guiding a stool having a lower mold fitted thereto and having a punch-out portion. A plurality of stations are sequentially disposed on the loop track for effecting the steps of cleaning the lower mold, arranging an upper mold, inserting tubular members for cooling, setting a cooling plate having a plurality of cooling nozzles for passing a cooling medium through the tubular members, pouring a molten metal, effecting cooling in several stages, removing the cooling plate and taking out the resulting casting. A cooling medium tube communicates with the cooling nozzles, having a coupler and disposed on the cooling plate. A cooling medium feeder is connected to the coupler and/or a cooling medium jet device for cooling the lower mold, and is disposed at each of the cooling stations.
