A method for manufacturing an electric contact material in which a surface layer portion of an alloy containing 1 to 15 mass % of Cu, 0.01 to 0.7 mass % of Ni, and the remainder of Ag and unavoidable impurities is supplied with an amount of oxygen exceeding the amount of oxygen required for internal oxidation of Cu to form an oxygen concentrated layer.

The invention is directed to an electric contact material useful in the fabrication of a vehicle relay of high durability against inductive load to which the relay incorporated in a magnetic clutch of a vehicle air-conditioner is exposed, and also to a relay having remarkable durability as has never been attained for use in vehicles. The invention provides an electric contact material useful in the fabrication of a relay for use in a vehicle, wherein the material contains an Ag&mdash;SnO &mdash;In O alloy which is produced through internal oxidation of an Ag&mdash;Sn&mdash;In&mdash;Ni alloy containing 5.0-10 wt. % (as reduced to metal) Sn and 2.0-5.0 wt. % In, the balance being Ag &lcub;or alternatively, an Ag&mdash;SnO &mdash;In O &mdash;NiO alloy which is produced through internal oxidation of an Ag&mdash;Sn&mdash;In&mdash;Ni alloy containing 5.0-10 wt. % (as reduced to metal) Sn, 2.0-5.0 wt. % In, and 0.01-0.50 wt. % Ni, the balance being Ag&rcub;, and is used in a shielded space.

Disclosed is a process of preparing a composite wire which comprises sealing one end of a pipe to be employed as a jacket, inserting a bar to be employed as a core into the pipe and conducting a hot processing of the pipe while vacuum-sucking the pipe from the other end thereof. In accordance with the present invention, the strength of the resulting composite wire is sufficient, and the number of operations can be reduced, that is, the wire can be prepared under the excellent workability and productivity.
