A liquid crystal composition that has a positive dielectric anisotropy and a sufficiently low viscosity and that causes no display defects when used in liquid crystal display devices is provided without decreasing or increasing the refractive index anisotropy or nematic phase-isotropic liquid phase transition temperature. This liquid crystal composition contains at least one compound selected from compounds represented by general formula (LC0) and at least one compound selected from the group consisting of compounds represented by general formulas (LC1) to (LC5). This liquid crystal composition can be used to provide a reliable liquid crystal display device capable of maintaining a high voltage-holding ratio at high temperatures. This liquid crystal display device is highly practical as a liquid crystal display and is effective in achieving quick response without significantly decreasing the cell gap.

Nematic liquid crystal composition

A liquid crystal composition exhibits a positive dielectric anisotropy and sufficiently low viscosity without decreasing or increasing refractive index anisotropy or nematic phase-isotropic liquid phase transition temperature, and does not cause display failures. The liquid crystal composition contains one or more compounds selected from compounds represented by general formula (LC0) and one or more compounds selected from a group of compounds represented by general formula (LC1) to general formula (LC5), in which the liquid crystal composition contains one or more compounds in which at least one of A, A, and Ato Ain general formulae (LC0) to (LC4) represents a tetrahydropyran-2,5-diyl group.

The present invention relates to a nematic liquid crystal composition useful as an electro-optic liquid crystal display material and having a positive dielectric anisotropy (&#x394;&#x2208;). The liquid crystal composition has refractive index anisotropy (&#x394;n) adjusted to a desired level, a sufficiently low viscosity (&#x3b7;), and a positive dielectric anisotropy (&#x394;&#x2208;) while degradation of the temperature range of the nematic phase is avoided by suppressing the decrease in nematic phase-isotropic liquid phase transition temperature (T) and the increase in lower limit temperature of the nematic phase. The liquid crystal composition contains one or more compounds selected from compounds represented by general formula (LC0) and one or more compounds selected from a group of compounds represented by general formula (LC1) to general formula (LC5).

Method for improving optical response and liquid crystal display device using same

The present invention relates to a liquid crystal display device that uses a particular liquid crystal composition and a color filter that uses a particular pigment. The present invention provides a liquid crystal display device that prevents a decrease in voltage holding ratio (VHR) and an increase in ion density (ID) of a liquid crystal layer and resolves the problems of display defects, such as missing dots, alignment variation, and ghosting. Since the liquid crystal display device of the present invention prevents a decrease in voltage holding ratio (VHR) and an increase in ion density (ID) of a liquid crystal layer and resolves the problems of display defects, such as ghosting, it is particularly useful for active matrix drive VA-mode and PSVA-mode liquid crystal display devices and can be applied to liquid crystal display devices such as liquid crystal televisions, monitors, cellular phones, and smart phones.

Liquid crystal display device

There is provided a liquid crystal display apparatus that may limit a reduction in the voltage holding ratio (VHR) of a liquid crystal layer and limit an increase in the ion density (ID) in the liquid crystal layer and address issues of faulty display such as white missing pixels, alignment inconsistencies, and burn-in. The liquid crystal display apparatus includes a first substrate, a second substrate, a liquid crystal composition layer held between the first substrate and the second substrate, a color filter including a black matrix and at least RGB three-color pixel portions, a pixel electrode, and a common electrode. The liquid crystal composition layer is composed of a liquid crystal composition including one or more compounds represented by General Formula (LC1). 

Provided is a liquid crystal display device of the VAIPS mode which uses a liquid crystal material having positive dielectric anisotropy and which has a fast response speed and excellent viewing angle characteristics without having a special cell structure such as pixel partitioning. Liquid crystal display device and useful liquid crystal composition

Provided is a liquid crystal display device of VAIPS mode, which uses a liquid crystal material having negative dielectric anisotropy (&#x394;&#x2208;&#x3c;0), and has a high response speed, a wide viewing angle, a high transmittance at the time of light transmission, a high black level at the time of light blockage, and an excellent contrast ratio. Disclosed is a liquid crystal display device including a first substrate, a second substrate, and a liquid crystal composition layer having negative dielectric constant, which is interposed between the first substrate and the second substrate, the liquid crystal display device being an electro-optical display device which has a plurality of pixels, and in which each of the pixels is independently controllable and has a pair of a pixel electrode and a common electrode, the two electrodes are provided on at least one substrate of the first substrate and the second substrate, and the long axis of the liquid crystal molecules of the liquid crystal composition layer is in a substantial vertical alignment or a hybrid alignment with respect to the substrate surface.

Provided is a liquid crystal composition having a positive dielectric anisotropy, the liquid crystal composition containing two or more compounds selected from compounds represented by general formula (LC0-1) to general formula (LC0-3), and one or more compounds selected from groups of compounds represented by general formula (LC1) to general formula (LC5). The liquid crystal composition has features of a large &#x394;&#x2208; and a low viscosity, and provides a practical, highly reliable liquid crystal display element that can realize low-voltage driving and high-speed response. The liquid crystal composition is useful for an active matrix driving liquid crystal display element. The liquid crystal composition can be applied to a liquid crystal display element of an IPS mode or the like.

There is provided a compound having a good miscibility with another liquid crystal compound and having a combination of a low viscosity (&#x3b7;), high storage stability, and high Teven after being used to produce a liquid crystal composition. In particular, it is a compound having a-fluorophenyloxymethane structure is provided. Since the compound having a-fluorophenyloxymethane structure is highly miscible with another liquid crystal compound, using the compound having a-fluorophenyloxymethane structure as a component of a liquid crystal composition enables a production of a liquid crystal composition which exhibits a liquid crystal phase at low viscosity and in a wide temperature range and which has a high storage stability and enables production of a liquid crystal display device which responds fast and which has excellent display characteristics.

Compound having 2-fluorophenyloxymethane structure

A nematic liquid crystal composition of the present invention is used in liquid crystal display devices of the TN mode, OCB mode, ECB mode, IPS mode, or VA-IPS mode. The liquid crystal composition has positive dielectric anisotropy. Since the refractive index anisotropy and the nematic phase-isotropic liquid phase transition temperature are decreased and the increase in the lower limit temperature of the nematic phase is suppressed, the viscosity of the liquid crystal composition is sufficiently low without degrading the nematic phase temperature range. The liquid crystal composition also offers excellent features such as high-speed response, good display quality, and less display failures and is thus suitable as a practical liquid crystal composition.

The present invention relates to a compound having a 2-fluorophenyloxymethane structure and useful for organic electronic materials and medical and agricultural chemicals, particularly materials for liquid crystal display elements. A problem to be solved by the invention is to provide a compound having relatively large &#x394;&#x2208;, relatively high T, low viscosity (&#x3b7;), and high miscibility with other liquid crystal compounds, and also provide a liquid crystal composition containing the compound as a constituent component. The present invention provides a compound having a 2-fluorophenyloxymethane structure and also provides a liquid crystal composition containing the compound and a liquid crystal display device using the liquid crystal composition.

An object of the present invention is to obtain a polymer-stabilized liquid crystal composition which can suppress dependency of a driving voltage on a temperature by decreasing the driving voltage. To a low-molecular liquid crystal compound, a chiral compound, and a specific acrylate and a polymerizable liquid crystal compound as polymerizable acrylate compounds are added, to prepare a polymer-stabilized liquid crystal composition. By subjecting the polymer-stabilized liquid crystal composition to ultraviolet exposure while maintaining a desired alignment state to form a polymer chain in a liquid crystal phase, a polymer-stabilized liquid crystal display device containing a low-molecular liquid crystal in a stabilized alignment state is obtained.
