A bidirectional optical communication system includes first and second transceivers arranged at opposed ends of an optical medium. Opto-electronic devices within the transceivers are arranged on respective mounting surfaces of planar substrates. First and second optical assemblies couple the respective transceivers to the optical medium. The optical assemblies include first and second optical elements arranged along an axis normal to the substrates. The first optical element is transparent to the optical signal transmitted from the respective transceiver and redirects the received optical signal from the other transceiver. The optical assemblies enable a single alignment of the opto-electronic devices and the optical medium.

Dual-wavelength bidirectional optical communication system and method for communicating optical signals

A consumer input/output (CIO) optical transceiver module, an active optical cable that incorporates a CIO optical transceiver module, and a method for using a CIO optical transceiver module in an active optical cable are provided. In contrast to optical transceiver modules currently used in active optical cables, which utilize parallel arrays of laser diodes and parallel arrays of photodiodes, the CIO optical transceiver module includes two singlet laser diodes and two singlet photodiodes for providing two high-speed transmit channels and two high-speed receive channels, respectively. Because the singlet laser diodes and photodiodes of the CIO optical transceiver module are less costly than the parallel arrays of laser diodes and parallel arrays of photodiodes that are used in known active optical cables, the CIO optical transceiver module can be manufactured at relatively low costs with high quality, and therefore is well suited for consumer applications.

An optical communication system including an integrated circuit chip, an electro-optical chip operatively integrated on the integrated circuit chip, an adjustable optical chip which includes at least one optical element disposed between the electro-optical chip and one of a source or recipient of at least one optical signal, at least one micromachine operatively coupled to the at least one optical element to selectively manipulate the at least one optical element; an optical signal sensor disposed relative to the at least one optical signal to sense an optical signal condition data, and to transmit said optical signal condition data to the integrated circuit chip, a feedback circuit between the integrated circuit chip and the at least one micromachine, the integrated circuit chip configured to receive the optical signal condition data, convert it to a corresponding feedback signal, and to transmit the feedback signal through the feedback circuit to the micromachine, thereby causing the micromachine to selectively manipulate the at least one optical element to alter the optical signal.
