A composition includes specific amounts of a virgin poly(arylene ether) resin and a rubber-modified polystyrene that is preferably derived from post-consumer recycling. The composition includes about 0.2 to about 1.5 weight percent of polymerized acrylonitrile residue that can originate as a contaminant in the recycled rubber-modified polystyrene. The composition avoids the need for compatibilizing agents required by related compositions.

A composition includes specific amounts of poly(phenylene ether), polymerized styrene residue, and polymerized acrylonitrile residue. The composition can be prepared using a recycled homopolystyrene that includes an acrylonitrile copolymer as an impurity. The composition largely preserves the desirable properties of a corresponding composition prepared from virgin resins without requiring chemical compatibilization of the poly(phenylene ether) and the acrylonitrile copolymer.

The thermoplastic compositions include poly(arylene ether), a poly(alkenyl aromatic), an organophosphate ester flame retardant, a functionalized polysiloxane, and an organic acid. The thermoplastic compositions produce surprisingly low smoke density when burned, and they are useful for the fabrication of articles for the transportation and building and construction industries.

A profile extrusion method utilizes a specific poly(arylene ether)/polystyrene composition with little or no unhydrogenated poly(conjugated diene) rubber. The method substantially reduces the amount of die lip build-up during continuous profile extrusion for eight hours or more. Reduction of die lip build-up in turn improves the structural integrity and aesthetic properties of the extruded article.
