A low sludge trivalent chromium based conversion coating bath is provided which forms corrosion resistant coatings on aluminum and aluminum alloys by contact with the bath, which is suitable for use as a rinseable or dry-in place conversion coating for metal, that comprises trivalent chromium cations, fluorometallate anions, guanidinium ions and at least one organic anti-corrosion additive, and other optional components, as well as methods of making and using same, and metals coated using the compositions, the coated aluminum serving as an effective base for paint primers.

Trivalent chromium-containing composition for aluminum and aluminum alloys

A coating composition and a method is used to coat metallic substrates for corrosion resistance. The coating composition includes acid, metal acetate, organosilane and water. The method includes steps of depositing the composition on an aluminum or aluminum alloy substrate and allowing the composition to dry to form a sol-gel coating on the substrate.

Ambient curable corrosion resistant sol-gel coating and composition and process for making the same

Corrosion resistant coatings are formed on aluminum by contacting with aqueous solutions containing trivalent chromium ions and fluorometallate ions, the solutions being substantially free of hexavalent chromium. Trivalent chromium films formed on the aluminum surface when tested in 5% NaCl salt spray chamber showed corrosion resistance in excess of 168 hours. Trivalent chromium coated aluminum also serves as an effective base for paint primers.
