An acrylic adhesive composition is provided comprising a free-radical polymerizable monomer, an initiation system and a co-accelerator that enhances the reactivity of the initiation system by increasing the reaction rate between the oxidizing agent and the reducing agent. The free radical-polymerizable monomer preferably comprises methyl methacrylate (MMA), the initiator system preferably comprises N,N-diisopropanol-p-toluidine (DIIPT) and benzoyl peroxide (BPO), and the co-accelerator preferably comprises 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane (or triethylene diamine (TDA)).

Acrylic adhesion promoters having an improved property such as cohesive failure are produced from a monocyclic anhydride of phosphonic acid containing multiple carboxylic acids that is subsequently reacted with a hydroxyalkyl methacrylate. The adhesion promoters are useful in bonding to metal substrates including oily metal substrates.

Polycarbometallane

Polyfunctional mercaptoalkyl-substituted aryl compounds, one and two-part adhesive compositions including the compounds, and methods of making and using the compounds are disclosed. The compounds include one or more aromatic rings, wherein at least one, and in one embodiment, only one aromatic ring is substituted with at least one alkylthio group and at least one oxyalkylthio group, and preferably do not include hydrolyzable linkages. The aromatic nucleus can provide the cured products with higher glass transition temperatures (T,'s) than are available from most commercially available polymercaptans. The adhesive systems include an epoxy resin or other compounds such as terminal olefins which are known to react with thiols (polymerizable material). Preferably, the compounds are used in combination with amine curatives as a two-component curing system for epoxy resins. Such a composition provides a two-stage cure which enables very quick achievement of bonded parts with handleable strength at room temperature or below, or with relatively low bake temperatures. The materials can be used for coatings, adhesives, sealants, potting compounds, and the like.

Poly (mercaptopropylaryl) curatives

A composition that includes an epoxy compound, a thiol curing agent, a catalyst and a phosphorus--containing compound having at least one P--OH group and at least one organic moiety characterized by the presence of an ethylenically unsaturated group. The composition is particularly useful as a sealer for an adhesive joint.

Thiol-cured epoxy composition

Containers for storing and/or transporting sulfur-containing compounds, and methods of deodorizing headspace gases containing sulfur-containing compounds, are disclosed. The containers include a body and a lid. In one embodiment, copper or another sulfur-deodorizing substance is attached to either the lid or upper sides of the container or is suspended in the headspace. The sulfur-deodorizing substance reacts with or adsorbs or absorbs any sulfur-containing compounds present in the headspace volume to reduce the odor in the headspace. In another embodiment, when the container include a solid or viscous liquid sulfur-containing compound, a pouch containing a sulfur-deodorizing substance is placed on top of the sulfur-containing compound. The pouch includes a liner or a sealed side in immediate contact with the solid or viscous liquid sulfur-containing compound, and a non-contacting portion providing a breathable, porous construction to permit the headspace gases to come into contact with the sulfur-deodorizing substance.

A primerless method for repairing a substrate surface that includes applying to the surface a curable filler composition that includes (i) an epoxy compound, (ii) a polythiol curing agent, and (iii) a catalyst and then curing the composition. The filler composition can also include a polyamine in addition to the catalyst.

The composition is particularly useful as a two part adhesive that includes a free radical catalyst system and a diene elastomer.

Additives for controlling cure rate of polymerizable composition

An olefinic-terminated polyalkadiene that includes carboxy ester linking groups and at least one nascent secondary hydroxyl group that is capped with a monoisocyanate. This polyalkadiene can be made by reacting a hydroxyl-terminated polyalkadiene with a saturated cyclic acid anhydride to form a carboxylic acid-terminated polyalkadiene, reacting the carboxylic acid-terminated polyalkadiene with an olefinic monoepoxide to form an olefinic-terminated polyalkadiene, then reacting the olefinic-terminated polyalkadiene with a monoisocyanate.

Olefinic and urethane-terminated ester polyalkadiene

A composition that includes an olefinic-terminated polyalkadiene that includes carboxy ester linking groups and at least one nascent secondary hydroxyl group that is capped with a monoisocyanate. The composition also includes a free radical-polymerizable monomer such as an olefinic monomer and, optionally, a second polymeric material. In a preferred embodiment the composition is an adhesive that also includes a phosphorus-containing compound and an ambient temperature-active redox catalyst system.
