A method of controlling at least one operation performed on a workpiece is provided. The method includes transmitting, from a first electronic reference device coupled to the workpiece, at least one operating parameter to at least one autonomous device. The method also includes performing, by the at least one autonomous device, the at least one operation on the workpiece in accordance with the received at least one operating parameter.

Method and system for controlling automated operations on a workpiece

A method of performing automated operations on a workpiece by at least one autonomous device is provided. The method includes sensing, by a first of the at least one autonomous devices, a guidance pattern positioned on the workpiece along a first path. The method also includes traversing, by the first autonomous device, along the first path by following the sensed guidance pattern, to a first path location that is within a detection distance of a first precision target indicator positioned on the workpiece.

Method and device for performing automated operations on a workpiece

Described herein is an apparatus for transporting and reorienting an object on a base surface includes a first header coupled to a first side of the object, and a second header coupled to a second side of the object. The object is between the first and second headers. Each of the first and second headers includes a first flat surface that is contactable with the base surface for supporting the object in a first orientation, a second flat surface that is contactable with the base surface for supporting the object in a second orientation, and a curved surface that couples the first and second flat surfaces. The curved surface is contactable with the base surface as the object transitions between the first and second orientations. A radius of curvature of the curved surface is based on a position of a center of gravity of the object.

Object transportation and reorientation apparatus

A computer implemented method, apparatus, and computer usable program code for generating a three-dimensional model of an object of interest in an aircraft. In response to transmitting a plurality of x-rays from a set of transmission points into the aircraft, backscatter x-ray data is received. The object identified from a two-dimensional diagram of the backscatter data. Points for the object are created from the identification of the object in the received data. The points are placed at a first distance from the transmission points to form a first curve. The points are placed at a second distance from the transmission points to form a second curve. A first surface is formed from the first and second curves. A second surface is formed that intersects the first surface to form an intersection. Three-dimensional data is generated for the three-dimensional model of the object from the intersection.

Method and apparatus for generating data for three-dimensional models from x-rays

The different advantageous embodiments provide a method for alignment of platform features. A number of feature locations for a platform is identified using a platform model. A number of platform instructions for taking measurements at the number of feature locations is identified using the platform model. Instructions are generated having a number of measurement locations for each feature location in the number of feature locations for the platform.

Computer aided feature alignment process

An aircraft air distribution system includes a base and first and second arrays of nozzle air transfer ports in the base. An adjustable flow plate is positioned over the nozzle air transfer ports. A compressible member is located between the base and the adjustable flow plate and between the first and second arrays. First and second air ejector regions are located, respectively, on the sides of the compressible member between the base and the adjustable flow plate to connect to the first and second arrays, and direct air from the first and second arrays from the sides of the base. Fasteners moveably connect the adjustable flow plate to the base and are adjustable to change a size of different sections of the first and second air ejector regions to change an amount of airflow originating from the different sections of these regions.

A method and apparatus for determining a spatial position of interest in an assembly is disclosed. In one embodiment, the method comprises the steps of determining a reference position of reference unit; moving the reference unit from the reference position to the first spatial position; inertially measuring a displacement of the reference unit while the reference unit is unilluminated by an illuminator; and determining the first position from the reference position, illuminator energy reflected from the reference unit, and the inertially measured displacement of the reference unit.

A tooling concept uses a compliant forming surface for forming composite parts. The tooling concept utilizes a rigid support substructure that has a thin compliant forming surface. In the preferred embodiment of the invention, the tooling concept is used to form a composite sine wave spar. A preferred embodiment of the tooling concept includes upper and lower tool inserts and side tool inserts. The upper tool insert has a compliant forming surface that is located in between a rigid support substructure and the composite material used to form the composite part. Composite prepreg is laid up over a sine wave contour on the upper and lower tool inserts to form upper and lower U-shaped composite workpieces. The upper and lower tool inserts and workpieces are then brought together to form a sine wave I-beam. Radius fillers are then applied to the intersections between the upper and lower composite workpieces and cap strips are placed over the flanges of the joined composite workpieces. Side tools and end tools are then placed around the joined upper and lower tool inserts. The resulting assembly is covered with a breather cloth, baked in a vacuum bag and cured in an autoclave. During curing, the autoclave applies a hydrostatic pressure on the upper tool insert and thus compliant forming surface. The compliant forming surface in turn applies a consolidation and forming pressure to the composite workpiece within the tools. During curing, the compliant forming surface deforms slightly to account for thickness variations in the composite workpiece in order to produce a better quality formed composite part.

A method for making a corrugated fiber reinforced preform for a corrugated channel is disclosed which involves the sequential application of fiber plies to a shaping tool, each of the plies individually formed to the contours of the shaping tool, using a corrugating tools, restraining means used to maintain the plies in conformance with the tool. The plies are then subjected to debulking and heated to stabilize the fiber plies in their shaped condition, with additional plies applied thereover using the same steps of application, forming, restraining and stabilizing to produce a thick debulked fiber preform which avoids wrinkling of the fibers at the radius between the web and side portions of the corrugated channel.
