A transducer for providing a modulated fluid pressure control signal having an electromagnetic stator operable in response to an electrical control signal to apply a magnetomotive torque to a rotary valve member for controlling fluid flow to and from a control signal chamber. A diaphragm senses the difference between the control signal chamber pressure and atmospheric pressure and is operable in response thereto for moving the rotor axially for varying the pole overlap and magnetomotive torque on the rotor.

Fluid pressure signal transducer

A water valve is disclosed for use in passenger vehicle heating systems. The valve includes a cylindrical metallic socket having a heat accepting surface portion connected to the valve housing and in fluid communication with fluid flowing through the valve. The position of the heat accepting surface portion relative to a rotatable butterfly valve member results in a vortex flow condition across the face of the heat accepting surface portion, thereby providing fast heat transfer from the fluid to the socket.

A switch assembly adapted for actuation by connection to an engine throttle shaft. The switch housing is adapted for mounting on an engine and has a rotary cam received therein having a socket for connection to the engine throttle shaft. Rotation of the cam sequentially actuates a plurality of electrical switches. The housing has a stationary and movable member with some of the switches mounted on each. A helical screw engages teeth on the movable member and for adjusting the relative position between the housing members. The screw is readily accessible from the exterior of the housing and rotation of the screw adjusts the at-rest position of the cam with respect to the switches for enabling easy calibration after installation on the engine.

Throttle operated controller assembly

A low pressure drop hot film mass air flowmeter (10) for an automotive engine is disclosed. The flowmeter includes a main air flow passage (20), a fixed contoured flow nozzle (22) disposed in the main air flow passage to establish a localized pressure differential thereacross and, a closed circuitous recirculation path (40) disposed adjacent the main air flow passage and in fluid communication therewith through an inlet port (42) disposed upstream of the flow nozzle and an outlet port (44) disposed downstream from the flow nozzle. Pressure differential at the ports establishes a substantially laminar control flow therebetween within the recirculation path which, in turn, by viscous action, establishes a recirculation flow (67) within the recirculation path. A constant temperature thermal anemometer (54) includes a hot film probe (56) and a temperature compensating probe (58) positioned to sense the recirculating air within the recirculation path. In the preferred embodiment of the invention, a second contoured flow nozzle (96) is disposed within the recirculation path to facilitate flow sensing therein. The anemometer generates an output signal representative of total mass air flow through the flowmeter.

Viscous link drive for fluid flowmeter

A passenger vehicle heater core fluid flow system and bypass valve (10) therefor is disclosed having a butterfly valve member (24) rotatably mounted in a primary fluid passageway (14) and intermediate first (20) and second (21) fluid ports which fluidly communicate with the primary passage. Third (22) and fourth (19) ports are in fluid communication with the primary passageway and spaced at each end thereof. The first and third ports are connected to high and low pressure locations on the engine cooling system respectively. The fourth port is connected to the heater core inlet and the second port is connected to the heater core outlet. When the valve is in an open position, a pair of isolated parallel flow paths are defined by flow through the first and fourth ports and by flow through the second and third ports. In the closed position flow enters the first port and immediately exhausts from the third port without entering the heater core flow path, thereby preventing heat transfer to the heater core.

Butterfly bypass valve

Fluid valves for use in internal combustion engines incorporate both plastic and metal housings which are joined at the inlet end to a metallic adapter by means of staking portions of the adapter over the exterior of the valve inlet housing tube. Valves having this type of connection are prone to failure caused by abuse encountered during valve installation and engine maintenance. In the present invention a fluid valve (10) is provided having superior strength at the junction between a plastic inlet (34) and a threaded metallic engine block adapter (14). A portion of the adapter extends into the inlet end of the housing and has a circumferential rib (48) having an outer knurled surface (50) located intermediate and adjacent to a pair of grooves (52, 54). By heating the knurled rib (48), the plastic material of the hollow inlet portion of the valve housing flows into and conforms with the grooves and the knurled rib thereby providing a rigid connection between the valve housing and the adapter. A seal ring (58) is mounted in a groove formed in the adapter and functions to fluidly seal the adapter to the inlet end of the housing.
