A method of preparing a transparency comprised of a substrate with two coating layers on the front side and two coating layers on the reverse side of the substrate; wherein said two front side coatings are comprised of a first layer in contact with the substrate, and a second toner receiving coating situated on top of the first coating and wherein the said two coatings in contact with the reverse side of the substrate are comprised of a third coating in contact with the substrate, and a fourth toner receiving coating layer on top of the third coating said method comprising (a) dissolving a coating solution of the first layer in a mixture of about two solvents where at least one solvent is a solvent for the coating layer and at least one other solvent is a gelling agent for the coating layer, (b) dissolving a second toner receiving composition in water, (c) coating the two solutions simultaneously, (d) drying, and (e) coating the third and fourth layers, and drying.

Transparencies

A process forms images on a substrate, and develops the images with toner. The substrate has a coating of a polymer that enables images of uniform gloss.

Coated photographic papers

A process which comprises forming an image on a substrate, and developing the image with toner, and wherein the substrate contains a coating of a polyester and there is enabled images of high uniform gloss.

A coated xerographic substrate comprised of a substrate with four coating layers, two coating layers on the front side of the substrate and two coating layers on the reverse side of the substrate, wherein said front side coatings are comprised of a antistatic hydrophilic layer in contact with the substrate comprised of a blend of (1) a hydrophilic binder, (2) a water soluble filler, (3) a water insoluble filler, (4) an antistatic cationic component (5) an optional filler dispersant, and (6) an optional biocide, and the second coating situated on top of the first coating comprised of (1) an ester binder,(2) a toner wetting agent, (3) a lightfast UV absorber, (4) a lightfast antioxidant/antiozonant compound, and (5) a filler; and wherein said two coatings in contact with the reverse side of the substrate are comprised of a third hydrophilic antistatic coating comprised of (1) a binder polymer, (2) a water soluble filler, (3) a water insoluble filler, (4) an antistatic agent, (5) a filler dispersant and (6) an optional biocide, and a fourth toner receiving coating layer on top of the third hydrophilic coating comprised of (1) a latex binder, (2) a toner wetting agent, (3) a lightfast UV absorber, (4) a lightfast antioxidant compound, (5) a lightfast antiozonant compound (6) filler, and (7) a biocide.

Coated substrates

A coated transparency comprised of a substrate with four hydrophilic coating layers, two coating layers on the front side of the substrate and two coating layers on the reverse side of the substrate, wherein said front side coatings are comprised of an antistatic hydrophilic layer in contact with the substrate comprised of a blend of (1) a hydrophilic binder, (2) a water soluble acid salt, (3) a cationic component, and (4) a biocide, and the second coating situated on top of the first coating is comprised of (1) a binder formed from a latex, (2) a toner wetting agent, (3) a lightfast UV absorber, (4) a lightfast antioxidant, and (5) a lightfast antiozonant compound; and wherein said two coatings in contact with the reverse side of the substrate are comprised of a third hydrophilic antistatic luminescent coating comprised of a blend of (1) a hydrophilic binder, (2) a water soluble acid salt, (3) a cationic component (4) a luminescent component and (5) a biocide, and the fourth coating situated on top of the third coating is comprised of (1) a binder formed from a latex, (2) a toner wetting agent, (3) a lightfast UV absorber, (4) a lightfast antioxidant, and (5) a lightfast antiozonant compound.

Disclosed are opaque plastic recording sheets comprised of (A) a substrate, (B) a receiving coating on the front side of the substrate capable of absorbing an ink vehicle and which receiving layer coating is comprised of (1) a hydrophobic binder polymer, (2) an ink wetting, (3) an ink spreading agent, (4) a dye mordant, (5) a lightfastness agent, (6) a filler, (7) an optional biocide; and (C) a toner receiving coating in contact with the reverse side of the substrate and which coating is comprised of (1) a binder polymer, (2) toner wetting and spreading agent, (3) an antistatic agent, (4) a pigment, (5) a lightfast agent, and (6) an optional biocide.

Recording sheets

A coated ink jet paper with (1) a cellulosic substrate, (2) a first ink receiving coating on the front side of the substrate capable of absorbing an ink vehicle, and which receiving layer coating is comprised of (a) a hydrophilic binder polymer, (b) an ink wetting/ink spreading agent, (c) a dye mordant, (d) a lightfastness agent, (e) a filler, (f) a biocide; and (3) a second traction controlling coating in contact with the reverse side of the substrate, and which coating is comprised of a polymer with a glass transition temperature of from between about a negative -50.degree. C. to about 50.degree. C., a lightfastness agent, an antistatic agent, a pigment, and a biocide. The cellulosic substrate can be comprised of alkaline sized and acid sized blends of hardwood kraft and softwood kraft fibers, which blends contain from about 20 percent to 80 percent by weight of softwood and from about 80 to about 20 percent by weight of hardwood. The sizing value of the cellulosic substrate varies between 50 seconds to 500 seconds, the porosity varies from 100 to 600 mil/minute, and the thickness varies between 50 microns to 250 microns.

Ink compositions

A coated xerographic photographic paper comprised of (1) a cellulosic substrate; (2) a first antistatic coating layer in contact with one surface of the substrate; (3) a second toner receiving coating on the top of the antistatic layer, and comprised of a mixture of a binder polymer, a toner spreading agent, a lightfastness inducing agent, a biocide, and a filler; and (4) a third traction controlling coating in contact with the back side of the substrate comprised of a mixture of a polymer with a glass transition temperature of from between about -50.degree. C. to about 50.degree. C., an antistatic agent, a lightfastness agent, a biocide and a pigment. The traction promoting third coating is also capable of receiving images from a xerographic copier/printer. The cellulosic substrate is comprised of alkaline sized and acid sized blends of hardwood kraft and softwood kraft fibers, which blends contain from about 10 percent to about 90 percent by weight of softwood and from about 90 to about 10 percent by weight of hardwood. The sizing value of the cellulosic substrate varies between 200 seconds to 1,100 seconds, the porosity varies from 50 to 300 mil/minute, and the thickness varies between 50 microns to 250 microns.

Coated xerographic photographic paper

Disclosed is a method of creating simulated, photographic-quality prints using transparent polyester substrates such as Mylar.RTM.; polypropylene, and the like. Reverse or wrong reading images are formed on the substrate using a linear or crosslinked low melt polyester toner and mixtures thereof. The reverse or wrong reading images are permanently adhered to the polyester substrate followed by the application of a backing member to the imaged transparent substrate. The backing member is characterized by being opaque and being coated with linear or crosslinked low melt polyester resin system to generate high fidelity, grain free photographic-quality images with reduced curl and improved adhesion due to similar rheological responses of the compatible materials in the toner, imaging substrate and the backing substrate.

Disclosed is an ink composition which comprises an aqueous liquid vehicle, a colorant, and an additive material selected from the group consisting of (a) symmetric acetylenic bisester alcohols, (b) symmetric acetylenic bisalkyl alcohols and acetylenic bisalkoxy alcohols, (c) symmetric acetylenic bisamido alcohols, (d) symmetric bisamido alcohols, (e) mono amido alcohols, (f) trialkylhydroxy compounds, (g) derivatives of 1,2-diols and 1,3-diols, (h) thio diols, (i) aromatic diols, (j) heterocyclic diols, (k) imino alcohols, (l) salts of hydroxyl compounds, (m) saccharides and saccharide derivatives, and (n) mixtures thereof. Also disclosed is an ink jet process which comprises (1) incorporating into a thermal ink jet printing apparatus the aforementioned ink composition; and (2) causing droplets of the ink to be ejected from the printing apparatus in an imagewise pattern onto a substrate, thereby generating images on the substrate. Further disclosed is an ink jet printing process which comprises (1) incorporating into a thermal ink jet printing apparatus the aforementioned ink composition; (2) causing droplets of the ink to be ejected from the printing apparatus in an imagewise pattern onto a substrate, thereby generating images on the substrate; and (3) exposing the substrate to microwave radiation, thereby drying the images on the substrate.

Ink jet inks and printing processes

A transparency comprised of a supporting substrate, and thereover two coatings, a first coating layer which comprises a binder having a melting point of 100.degree. to 275.degree. C. and a heat dissipating and a fire retardant component, a second dye immobilizing light resistant, water resistant ink receiving coating layer situated so that the first coating layer is between the second dye immobilizing light resistant, water resistant ink receiving coating layer, and the substrate, said second dye immobilizing light resistant, water resistant coating layer comprising a blend of a hydrophilic polymer, an ink spreading agent, cationic component monomeric or polymeric capable of complexing with the ink dyes used to develop the transparency, a lightfastness inducing agent, and/or mixtures thereof, a filler and a biocide, and preferably wherein the two coatings are present on each surface of the supporting substrate.

Ink jet transparencies

A transparency comprised of a supporting substrate, thereover a first coating layer comprised of an ink absorbing layer and a biocide; and a second ink spreading coating layer comprised of a hydrophilic vinyl binder, a dye mordant, a filler, an optional lightfastness inducing agent, and an ink spot size increasing agent selected from the group consisting of hydroxy acids, amino acids and polycarboxyl compounds; and wherein the first coating is in contact with the substrate and is situated between the substrate and the second ink coating, and which transparency possesses a haze value of from about 0.5 to about 10 and a lightfastness value of from about 95 to about 98.

A transparency comprised of a supporting substrate, thereover a first coating layer comprised of an anionic layer that binds well with the substrate; and a second cationic layer situated on the top of the first anionic layer that binds with the anionic layer and comprised of cationic quaternary monomers and polymers thereof and a lightfastness inducing agent; and a third ink receiving layer situated on the top of the second cationic layer and comprised of block copolymers and graft polymers, a biocide and a filler; which transparency possesses a haze value of from about 0.5 to about 10 and a lightfastness value of from about 95 to about 98.
