Provided is a compact projection display with high throughput. The projection display includes: an illumination unit which irradiates a plurality of single color light beams; a first scanner scanning the plurality of light beams irradiated from the illumination unit along a first direction; a light modulator with a linear array of micro-electromechanical system (MEMS) devices that are arranged parallel to the first direction; an F-&#x3b8; lens disposed between the first scanner and the light modulator and having a first entrance pupil and a second entrance pupil; and a second scanner disposed opposite to the second entrance pupil of the F-&#x3b8; lens and which scans a light beam passing through the second entrance pupil of the F-&#x3b8; lens on a screen along a second direction that is orthogonal to the first direction.

The projection optical system includes: A projection optical system comprising: a first optical part that comprises at least one optical lens, and projects and displays light beams; a second optical part that comprises an image forming element and at least one optical lens, and emits incident light beams as light beams with images; and a third optical part that comprises a light source unit and a deflector that is located between the first and second optical parts, and directs light beams emitted from the light source unit to the second optical part and directs the light beams with images emitted from the second optical part to the first optical part.

Projection optical system

A compact rear projection display which can be used in mobile devices is provided. The compact rear projection display includes a main body unit which generates image signals, an image providing unit which forms and projects an image according to the image signals received from the main body unit, a transparent light guide plate, and a screen disposed at a surface of the transparent light guide plate. The transparent light guide plate guides the image incident from the image providing unit to be displayed on the screen.

A projection display projects color images on a screen. The projection display includes: an illuminating unit which emits a plurality of linear beams that are in parallel to each other; a scroll unit which scrolls the plurality of linear beams; a line type light modulator which modulates the plurality of linear beams according to image signals; and a scan unit which scans the plurality of linear beams in a direction perpendicular to the scrolling direction.

Illumination unit and image projecting apparatus employing the same

A retro-reflect type light pipe, an illumination device including the same, and a projection display including the illumination device are provided. The retro-reflective type light pipe includes an incident portion through which light is incident, a guide portion which guides the incident light such that the incident light propagates internally therewithin while being reflected at inner walls thereof, and which thereby mixes the incident light thus providing uniform light. A retro-reflective portion, provided at one end of the guide portion, re-reflects the incident light toward the incident portion. The illumination device includes a light source, the retro-reflective type light pipe, and an optical path-changing member provided between the light source and the retro-reflective type light pipe, which changes the direction of the light emitted from the light source such that the light from the light source propagates toward the retro-reflective type light pipe.

A slim optical projection system and an image display apparatus employing the same. The optical projection system includes: a relay lens group to produce an intermediate image from an image created by a display and to generate a first distortion in the intermediate image, a projection lens group to enlarge and project the intermediate image that passes through the relay lens group and to generate a second distortion in the projected image, and a reflector to reflect the image enlarged by the projection lens group to a screen at a wide viewing angle. The first and second distortions are used to compensate for a third distortion caused by the reflector.

A projection display system includes a screen, an illumination projecting system to form an image using light radiated by a light source, to magnify the image, and to project the image along a rear side of the screen, and a reflection unit having an array of unit mirrors to reflect the image received from the illumination projecting system onto the screen, each of the unit mirrors having a first sloped reflection surface and a second reflection surface adjacent to the first reflection surface having a predetermined angle therebetween.

Illuminator

A projection display includes first through third light source units to radiate first through third light beams, respectively, having different colors, an X-cube prism to combine paths of the first through third light beams, an optical modulator to sequentially modulate the first through third light beams according to image information, and a projection lens unit to magnify and project the modulated light beams onto a screen. Each of the first through third light source units includes at least one optical module. The optical module includes a collimator having a first reflective surface in a parabolic shape, and a compact light source located in the vicinity of a focal point of the first reflective surface.

A projection display including first through third light source units to radiate first through third light beams having different colors, respectively, a light path combining unit to combine paths of the first through third light beams, an optical modulator to sequentially modulate the first through third light beams according to image information, and a projection lens unit to magnify and project the modulated light beams onto a screen. The light path combining unit includes first and second prisms. The first prism includes first and second incidence surfaces, through which the first and second light beams are incident, respectively, a first emission surface, and a first selective reflection surface to transmit the second light beam toward the first emission surface. A projection apparatus including a polarization conversion system to convert light having a first polarization component; a color recycling system, which separates the light into first and second color lights, to transmit and reflect the first and second color lights; an image forming system including a first reflective panel and a second reflective panel, which respectively modulate the first and second color lights, and a third reflective panel, which modulates the third color light; and an optical path conversion system, which splits the optical paths of fourth and fifth color lights incident from the color recycling system such that the first color light in the fourth color light is directed to the first reflective panel, the second color light in the fifth color light is directed to the second reflective panel, and the third color light in the fourth and fifth color light is directed to the third reflective panel.

Illumination system and projection system adopting the same

An illumination system capable of realizing a color image without a color wheel, and a projection system employing the illumination system. The illumination system includes first, second, and third light emitting devices and first and second hologram devices. The first, second, and third light emitting devices emit light beams having different wavelengths. The first and second hologram devices are disposed in an 'X' configuration at an angle with respect to the first, second, and third light emitting devices and transmit or reflect incident light depending on the wavelength of the light. The projection system further includes a display device, and a projection lens unit. The display device processes beams incident in one direction via the first and second hologram devices, according to an input image signal, and forms an image. The projection lens unit enlarges and projects the image formed by the display device on a screen. The illumination system and the projection system can realize a wide color gamut. Thus, the illumination system and the projection system can provide a high-density and high-quality image, and can be compact by compressing the cross-sectional area of a beam.

Illumination system and projection system employing the same

An illumination system which realizes a color image without a color wheel and a projector adopting the illumination system. The illumination system comprises at least one light emitting device which emits a light beam having a predetermined wavelength and a holographic optical element which reduces a cross section of the light beam. The projector includes the illumination system, a display device which forms an image by processing light from the illumination system according to an input image signal, and a projection lens which magnifies and projects the image onto a screen. The light emitting device may be constructed in an array form and the arrays may be arranged inline and adjacent to an optical path changer or distributed around an optical path changer at predetermined angles. The arrays and holographic optical elements may be provided in layers in order to reduce a size of the illumination system.
