A method and apparatus for control of pivoting machine members propelled by linear actuators so as to permit coordinated motion of the pivoting members with translating machine members. Position commands for the pivoting machine members are given in angular units. The propelling linear actuators are controlled by servomechanism control providing position and velocity control. Position measurements for the pivoting members measure linear displacement of the propelling actuator. Position commands for the pivoting members are compensated according to the non-linear relationship between displacement of the propelling actuator and the angular displacement of the pivoting member.

Servo spool control for tape web positioning is disclosed wherein the position of the web between two spools may be accurately known and controlled and the tension on the web maintained. To accomplish such control, the motors driving the respective spools are driven by dynamic torque signals in response to change in position commands from a computer controller wherein the dynamic torque signals are correlated to the inertial torque and frictional torque of the spools and their drives.

In reaction injection molding facilities of the recirculation type, a closed loop system controls the addition of a gas to a mixture of liquid and gas. The system takes a sample volume of the liquid and forces a plunger into the sample volume. The distance travelled by the plunger between two preset pressures of the sample is measured and compared to a reference distance to get a control signal that is used to operate a valve that controls gas admission to the mixture.

A slide valve has a spool valve element that is moved unidirectionally to a sequence of three positions during its operating cycle. The valve structure and unidirectional motion of the spool provide a precompression of the fluid being handled. The valve structure also permits relief of excess downstream pressure. Preferably hydraulic liquid is used to drive, position, and reset the spool valve. The spool valve itself has a hollow body with one groove on its outside surface and a valve body with a port at one end that is always in communication with the hollow portion of the spool valve. The slide valve is especially designed for and preferably used in a liquid reaction molding system to direct a reagent between a source (e.g. reservoir) and a destination (e.g. a mixing head). When applied to such a reaction molding system each slide valve replaces three conventional ball valves and one check valve and yet provides the additional features of precompression and relief of excess pressure.

A method of purging a particulate suspension fluid from a fluid system during system shut-down utilizes an unparticulated constituent as the purging fluid. The unparticulated constituent remains in the system during shut-down periods and is subsequently converted to a composite fluid of the type it was previously used to purge.

Liquid reaction molding (LRM) shot size and ratio control is achieved using a programmable controller (microprocessor) to select on a first-come-first-served basis one mold from among several and to manipulate a plunger metering pump system by retracting each of a pair of pump plungers to the same position each time the system is reset and to decompress or reduce pressures after injection. Each and every shot is started from this uniform reset position. Later steps in the sequence are: taking the hydraulic slack out of each pump system by prepressurizing which is done by advancing each plunger from said position independently until each and all liquid systems reach a threshold pressure (which pressure may differ from one liquid system to the other), feeding the shot size or quantity of each liquid (i.e. injection) by advancing the plunger a predetermined amount (or stroke) from the place it arrives upon reaching the threshold pressure, and to decompress by reversing plunger movement after injection but before any valve manipulations occur. Ratio control is exercised by slaving one plunger to another plunger during injection. The position of the pump plungers where the threshold pressures are reached is called a 'floating zero.' A satellite LRM system has a single shot size control and feeding system (as above) furnishing reagents to one of several molds connected to it in response to a first-come-first-served selection program in the controller. The above uniform reset feature permits faster response to a request for a shot.

Liquid feeding control method

Apparatus is described for the controlled mixing of liquids in a predetermined ratio and is especially suitable for the dispensing of predetermined ratios of polyol and polyisocyanate liquids in the liquid injection molding of polyurethane articles. The ratio control is achieved by a master-slave velocity relationship between at least two metering pumps of the plunger or piston type which are velocity coupled and inject on a common programmed velocity profile that is fed into the pump control that is the master system. Each pump control system has a velocity feedback control loop (a closed loop system) and one signal into the slave automatic control system (typically the polyol system) is obtained in a suitable ratio from the feedback master automatic control system (typically the poly isocyanate system).

Method for the controlled mixing of liquids in a predetermined ratio and is especially suitable for the dispensing of predetermined ratios of polyol and polyisocyanate liquids in the liquid injection molding of polyurethane articles. The ratio control is achieved by a master-slave relationship between at least two metering pumps of the plunger or piston type which are position coupled and inject on a common programmed velocity profile (in the master system), but with each system controlled by an automatic velocity feedback control loop (a closed loop system) wherein the reference signal into the slave automatic control system (typically the polyol system) is obtained in a suitable ratio from the master automatic control system (typically the polyisocyanate system). The method includes continuing to drive the metering pumps past the time that mixing is cut off.
