Certain aspects of the present disclosure relate to methods and apparatus for improving voice over new radio (VoNR)-to-voice over long term evolution (VoLTE). An example method generally includes communicating with and camping on a next generation node B (gNB) in a 5G new radio (NR) system; initiating a voice call with the gNB; receiving a 5G NR-to-long term evolution (LTE) handover command in response to initiating the voice call; performing a handover procedure in response to the handover command; detecting a failure in the handover procedure; and taking one or more actions in response to detecting the failure in the handover procedure.

Techniques for improving VoNR-to-VoLTE fallback

Various aspects of the present disclosure generally relate to wireless communication. In some aspects, a user equipment (UE) may determine that the UE is in an active communication session using a first radio access technology (RAT), wherein the UE is operating in a dual connectivity mode that uses a master cell group for the first RAT and a secondary cell group for a second RAT; determine that the UE is configured with a maximum transmit power, for the first RAT in the dual connectivity mode, that is less than a maximum transmit power threshold; determine that at least one of a power headroom (PHR) value or an estimated uplink block error rate (BLER) satisfies a condition; and transmit an indication that the secondary cell group has failed based at least in part on those determinations. Techniques for indicating and/or selecting a modulation and coding scheme (MCS) are disclosed. A method for selecting the MCS may comprise receiving control information, identifying a change indicator, determining a first MCS based on the control information, and modifying the first MCS based on the change indicator to determine a second MCS.

Disclosed are techniques for transmitting bundles of silence indicator (SID) frames during a voice call among a plurality of access terminals. In an aspect, a source access terminal detects a transition to a silence state, generates, in response to detection of the transition, at least a first bundle of SID frames, wherein each SID frame of the at least the first bundle of SID frames includes data representing comfort noise to be played at one or more target access terminals of the plurality of access terminals during the silence state, and transmits the at least the first bundle of SID frames to a base station serving the source access terminal. In an aspect, the base station receives the at least the first bundle of SID frames, and periodically forwards SID frames of the at least the first bundle of SID frames to the one or more target access terminals.

Optimized uplink operation for voice over long-term evolution (VoLte) and voice over new radio (VoNR) listen or silent periods

Aspects of the present disclosure relate to methods and apparatus for optimizing real time services (e.g., such as a voice over Long Term Evolution (LTE) (VoLTE)) for devices with limited communications resources, such as machine type communication (MTC) devices and enhanced MTC (eMTC) devices. In one aspect, a UE determines a first configuration of subframes within at least one radio frame available for the UE and other UEs to use for bundled communications with a BS. The UE receives an indication of one or more subframes within the at least one radio frame that are unavailable for bundled uplink transmissions, and determines a second configuration of subframes to use for bundled communications based on the indication. The UE overrides the first configuration of subframes with the second configuration of subframes, and communicates with the BS using the second configuration of subframes. Numerous other aspects are provided.

Volte optimizations for eMTC devices

A method, an apparatus, and a computer program product for wireless communication are provided. The apparatus may receive information indicating a potential handoff for another apparatus in communication with the apparatus. The apparatus may adjust, based on the information indicating the potential handoff, a communication parameter or a communication rate associated with the communication before the potential handoff occurs. The apparatus may identify a potential handoff during communication with another apparatus. The apparatus may cause, based on identifying the potential handoff, an adjustment to a communication parameter or a communication rate associated with the communication before the potential handoff occurs.

Rate adaptation during handoffs

Improved methods, systems, devices, or apparatuses support header compression for reduced bandwidth wireless devices prior to an initial transmission that includes a real-time data payload. A data flow containing real-time multimedia data may be initiated between a UE and a base station. In order to enhance the likelihood of meeting data flow timing constraints, compression context may be established prior to a first transmission of a packet with a real-time data payload. The one or more initial transmissions may include a small payload, that is smaller than typical real-time data payloads, may be used to establish compression context for the data flow. When a packet with a real-time payload is to be transmitted, the transmission may use header compression and be transmitted in less time than a transmission without header compression.

An apparatus includes de-jitter buffer control circuitry configured to determine an arrival delay value based on previously received audio packets, to identify a receive time of a first audio packet of a talk spurt, to determine an offset value of the first audio packet based on the receive time and the arrival delay value, and to adjust a target delay value associated with a de-jitter buffer based on the offset value. The apparatus also includes a de-jitter buffer configured to buffer the first audio packet based on the adjusted target delay value.

A network element receives an IP packet that is not associated with a QoS request on a bearer for an application/service executing on a target client device, and initiates QoS activation for the target client device based on a combination of an application-specific identifier from the target client device and a user-specific identifier of the application/service. A server receives a session setup request that is not associated with a QoS request for an application/service executing on a target client device, the session setup request identifying one or more client devices to participate in a session, and initiates QoS activation for at least one of the client devices, before a session announcement is transmitted to the client devices, based on a combination of an application-specific identifier from the target client device and a user-specific identifier of the application/service.

Capacity limited devices may initiate real-time Internet protocol (IP) flows that may include voice data for voice calls. Talk-over patterns may be identified, and an IP flow may be modified based at least in part on the identified talk-over pattern. Such a modification of an IP flow may include, for example, dropping one or more downlink or uplink packets of the IP flow, modifying a semi-persistent scheduling (SPS) grant to suppress one or more uplink transmissions, or modifying a reliability target associated with the IP flow to reduce a number of redundant transmissions or number of retransmissions.
