Methods, systems, and computer program products for selection of a witness during virtualization system recovery after a disaster event. A recovery plan is configured to identify a witness that is then used to elect a leader to implement the recovery. Various system, and/or network, and/or component failures and/or various loss of function of components of the virtualization system can trigger initiation of the recovery plan. Based on the particular recovery plan that is invoked upon a determination of a network outage, or component failure or loss of function of a component of the virtualization system, a particular witness corresponding to a subset of entities of the particular recovery plan is selected. The witness is used to elect the leader, and the leader initiates actions of the recovery plan. The implementation of the recovery plan includes consideration of the health of components that would potentially be involved in the recovery actions.

Selecting a witness service when implementing a recovery plan

In accordance with some aspects of the present disclosure, a non-transitory computer readable medium is disclosed. In some embodiments, the non-transitory computer readable medium includes instructions that, when executed by a processor, cause the processor to receive, from a workload hosted on a host of a cluster, first I/O traffic programmed according to a first I/O traffic protocol supported by a cluster-wide storage fabric exposed to the workload as being hosted on the same host. In some embodiments, the workload is recovered by a hypervisor hosted on the same host. In some embodiments, the non-transitory computer readable medium includes the instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to adapt the first I/O traffic to generate second I/O traffic programmed according to a second I/O traffic protocol supported by a repository external to the storage fabric and forward the second I/O traffic to the repository.

Instant recovery as an enabler for uninhibited mobility between primary storage and secondary storage

A high frequency snapshot technique improves data replication in a disaster recovery (DR) environment. A base snapshot is generated from failover data at a primary site and replicated to a placeholder file at a secondary site. Upon commencement of the base snapshot generation and replication, incremental light weight snapshots (LWSs) of the failover data are captured and replicated to the secondary site. A staging file at the secondary site accumulates the replicated LWSs ('high-frequency snapshots'). The staging file is populated with the LWSs in parallel with the replication of the base snapshot at the placeholder file. At a subsequent predetermined time interval, the accumulated LWSs are synthesized to capture a “checkpoint” snapshot by applying and pruning the accumulated LWSs at the staging file. Once the base snapshot is fully replicated, the pruned LWSs are merged to the base snapshot to synchronize the replicated failover data.

High frequency snapshot technique for improving data replication in disaster recovery environment

A technique efficiently migrates a live virtual disk (vdisk) across storage containers of a cluster having a plurality of nodes deployed in a virtualization environment. Each node is embodied as a physical computer with hardware resources, such as processor, memory, network and storage resources, that are virtualized to provide support for one or more user virtual machines (UVM) executing on the node. The storage resources include storage devices embodied as a storage pool that is logically segmented into the storage containers configured to store one or more vdisks. The storage containers include a source container having associated storage policies and a destination container having different (new) storage policies. The technique enables migration of the live vdisk from the source container to the destination container without powering down the UVM and halting input/output accesses to the vdisk, and while maintaining uninterrupted servicing of data from the live vdisk during the migration transparent to the executing UVM.

Technique for efficient migration of live virtual disk across storage containers of a cluster

A system and method include migrating, by a migration controller, a first entity of a first subset of entities from a source site to a target site in a virtual computing system based on an asynchronous mode of replication. The system and method also include replicating, by the migration controller, data of a second entity of a second subset of entities from the source site to the target site based on a synchronous mode of replication in parallel with the migration of the first entity for dynamically adjusting a recovery time objective parameter.

System and method for dynamically adjusting recovery time objective in a virtual computing system

Techniques for performing compression operations on persistently-stored data blocks during read/write commands. A method embodiment performs in-line data compression operations over data blocks referenced by a caller. The in-line data compression operations are performed during execution of a storage input-output (I/O) command, between the event of receipt of the storage I/O command and the event of returning status of the storage I/O command. The storage I/O operation is associated with at least one data group comprising one or more data blocks that are identified by the caller. Upon receipt of the storage I/O command, one or more compression rules are applied to the data blocks to determine one or more compression parameters, which compression parameters are used to form specific compression operations that are performed over at least a portion of the data group. The status pertaining to the execution of the storage I/O operation is returned to the caller.

Dynamic data compression

A dynamic feedback technique improves data replication performance by balancing rates of data retrieval and data transmission of a fragmented virtual disk replicated between nodes of clusters on a local site and a remote site of a disaster recovery environment. Each node is embodied as a physical computer with hardware resources, such as processor, memory, network and storage resources, which are virtualized to provide support for one or more user virtual machines executing on the node. The storage resources include storage devices of an extent store, whereas the network includes a wide area network connecting the local and remote sites. The dynamic feedback technique employs a virtual memory buffer configured to balance the data storage retrieval and network transmission rates at a source of replication based on bandwidth demands of the extent store and network throughput as manifested by an available free space (i.e., emptiness) of the virtual buffer.

An illustrative embodiment disclosed herein is an apparatus including a processor having programmed instructions to request, from each of a plurality of services spanning multiple clusters, a plurality of time instances. A plurality of snapshots were taken during the plurality of time instances. The processor has programmed instructions to present, to a user, the plurality of time instances and a plurality of identifiers. Each of the plurality of identifiers corresponds to one of the plurality of services. The processor has programmed instructions to receive, from the user, a first selection of a first time instance of the plurality of time instances and a second selection of a subset of the plurality of identifiers. Each of the subset of identifiers corresponds to one of a subset of the plurality of services. The processor has programmed instructions to apply, to a target, a subset of the plurality of snapshots.

System and method of time-based snapshot synchronization

A system and method for capturing high frequency snapshots of an entity includes creating, by a storage sub-system associated with a distributed storage system of a virtualized environment, a cached configuration of an entity within the storage sub-system, capturing, by the storage sub-system, a snapshot of the entity from the cached configuration based on a schedule of a snapshot policy, including sending, by the storage sub-system, the snapshot to a repository indicated in the snapshot policy, and determining, by the storage sub-system, that a configuration file associated with the entity has been updated. The system and method also includes updating, by the storage sub-system, the cached configuration based upon the configuration file that has been updated.

System and method for creating high frequency snapshots of an entity in a virtualized environment

Systems for multi-cluster virtualized computing system management. A method for performing virtual entity replication between source computing clusters and target computing clusters commences upon establishing a virtual entity naming convention that is observed by both the source computing clusters and the target computing clusters. A snapshot from a source cluster is associated with a global snapshot ID before being transmitted to a target computing cluster. At some point in time, the source cluster will initiate acts to replicate a virtual entity to a particular data state that is associated with a particular named snapshot. A second replication protocol then commences. The second replication protocol includes exchanges that serve to determine whether or not the target computing cluster has a copy of a particular named snapshot as named by the global snapshot ID, and if so, to then initiate virtual entity replication at the target computing cluster using the named snapshot.
