A method and apparatus for positioning a patient for a medical procedure. The apparatus includes an air-impervious casing having a plurality of sections adapted to position and support the torso and limbs of a patient. A plurality of compartments containing beads are disposed in the sections. A plurality of connection ports are provided through which air may be evacuated from the compartments to form vacuums therein. When air is evacuated from the compartments, the beads compact together, thereby making the sections rigid.

A leg holder system for simultaneously positioning in the abduction and lithotomy dimensions including a support device for supporting a leg cradle; a clamping device for mounting the proximate end of the support device to a mounting device having a first axis and selectively clamping and releasing motion of the support device about the first axis and about a second axis transverse to the first axis. An actuator device for actuating the clamp to selectively clamp and release simultaneously the support device and the mounting device; and an operator device remote from the clamping device and actuator device for operating the actuator device to enable the support device to move simultaneously about the first and second axis in both the lithotomy and abduction dimensions.

An X-ray table top is moveably supported by a shaft extending from a support mechanism on a base to the end of the table top at one longitudinal side thereof offset from the longitudinal axis of the top. The support mechanism includes means for raising and lowering the table top, first rotational means for effecting Trendelenburg tilting the top about an axis transverse of its longitudinal axis and second rotational means for canting it about the longitudinal axis or an axis parallel thereto. The offset support connection to the table top allows unobstructed access to both side, the foot end, and to the head end of the table top for anesthesiological personnel and equipment.

An X-ray table top is moveably supported by a shaft extending from a support mechanism on a base to the end of the table top at one longitudinal side thereof offset from the longitudinal axis of the top. X-ray patient support apparatus

A pivot assembly including a rotating member, a mounting member for supporting the rotating member, and a pivotal interconnection for the members. The interconnection enables rotation about a pivot axis and inhibits translation of the rotating member relative to the mounting member along the pivot axis. There are also structure enabling tilting of the rotating member about a tilt axis transverse to the pivot axis, and gripping elements for inhibiting relative rotation about the pivot axis. The gripping elements increase grip between the adjacent sections when the rotating member is tilted about the tilt axis in a first direction, and decrease grip when the rotating member is tilted about the tilt axis in a second and opposite direction to enable rotation of the rotating member.

Locking pivot assembly with both pivot and tilt axes

A convertible carriage including a superstructure with a seat for carrying a person to be transported, and a number of wheels. The wheels are rollably supported by wheel support structure which is movably interconnected with the superstructure. The superstructure is rollably transportable when the wheel support structure and wheels are in an extended position. The carriage further includes a device for relocating the wheels concurrently between the extended position and a retracted position in the superstructure.

Convertible carriage

An armboard mounting assembly including an armboard having a proximate and a distal end, an armboard mount, and a joint for pivotably interconnecting the armboard and the armboard mount for enabling rotation of the armboard about a pivot axis. The rotatable armboard and armboard mount have at least one pair of adjacent sections, and the assembly further includes friction members (or alternate grippers) for providing gripping between said adjacent sections, said friction members being responsive to a downward force on the armboard between the pivot axis and the distal end for increasing gripping between the adjacent sections and inhibiting relative rotation about the pivot axis. Depending on the materials used, the armboard mounting assembly is radiologically translucent, NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance)-compatible, or both.

A superstructure, functioning as the car seat, is retractably telescoped into a base member when the transporter is to be positioned upon the seat of an automobile, the child being strapped within the car seat portion of the superstructure. The transporter is thereafter easily removed from the automobile, and the superstructure is slidably extended from the base member to convert it into a stroller, and is maintained in a first extended position away from the base member by a locking mechanism. The transporter is converted back into a compact car seat, by unlocking the locking device, by applying two discrete motions for safety reasons, to cause the transporter to be collapsed, before insertion back into the automobile. During the collapsing of the transporter, a pair of wheel covers are automatically actuated, to cover the rims of the wheels to prevent any debris picked up by the wheels from being deposited on the car seats, and additionally to stabilize the transporter upon the seat of the automobile. The superstructure and base member are each configured of light weight, non-collapsible, structures in contrast with the collapsible tubular frameworks generally utilized in present day strollers; thus manufacturing costs are reduced.

Child car seat convertible into a stroller

An X-ray tube and receptor are held on opposite ends of a two-limbed carriage mounted on a sliding arm. The arm is carried on a rotating support, the arm extending parallel to the rotational axis of the support. The two-limbed carriage pivots on the arm about a second axis perpendicular to the rotational axis and to a radiation axis extending between the X-ray tube and receptor.
