Resin air bag

A base cloth for an air bag is obtained by forming a film of a silicone modified thermoplastic polyurethane resin having a polysiloxane segment on a surface of a woven fabric, and the air bag is formed of the base cloth. Since an organic solvent is not used when the resin is prepared, its workability is superior, the resin is safe for the human body. Also, the air bag can be quickly developed in a wide range from an extremely low temperature to a high temperature, and there is no problem of adhesion or sticking. Thus, the air bag having a stable performance and the base cloth for the air bag are provided.

A method of manufacturing a resin bag whereby the peripheral edge of the bag such as a resin air baa is not bulky, the bonding strength is still sufficient, and the productivity is increased, is provided. A first resin sheet and a heat-resisting sheet are overlaid on each other and are disposed in a cavity of a mold . The diameter of the heat-resisting sheet is smaller than that of the first resin sheet so that a portion of the sheet is exposed outside the heat-resisting sheet . Method of making a resin airbag

In manufacturing a resin bag, a first resin sheet is disposed in a cavity of a mold, and a heat-resisting sheet smaller than the first resin sheet is overlaid on the first resin sheet to expose a periphery of the first resin sheet along the outer periphery of the heat-resisting sheet. Then, a molten resin is injected into the cavity in a state where the mold is opened, and the mold is closed while pressing and expanding the injected resin in a molten state. Thus, the injected resin covers the heat-resisting sheet and the exposed periphery of the first resin sheet. The second resin sheet is molded, and the periphery of the second resin sheet is bonded with the periphery of the first resin sheet at the same time.

An air bag is made of thermoplastic urethane resin. The resin has a hardness (Shore scale A) of 88 to 92 measured by JIS K-7311; a tensile strength of 400 kg/cm.sup.2 or more measured by JIS K-7311; a breaking elongation of 400% or more measured by JIS K-7311; a 100% modulus of 70 kg/cm.sup.2 or more measured by JIS K-7311; a 300% modulus of 150 kg/cm.sup.2 or more measured by JIS k-7311; a tearing strength of 75 kg/cm or more measured by JIS K-7311; a pour point of 180.degree. C. to 188.degree. C. measured by Flow Tester; and a melting viscosity of 2.5.times.10.sup.5 Ps/190.degree. C. to 45.times.10.sup.5 Ps/190.degree. C. measured by Flow Tester.

Air bag made of resin

To design an air bag in such a manner that a joint between synthetic resin sheets composing the air bag is directed to an instrument panel when the air bag is deployed, an air bag 1 is formed by joining together a circular front panel 2 and a circular rear panel 3 having an opening 4 through which an inflator is inserted in the center of the rear panel 3. The front and rear panels 2 and 3 are each made of synthetic resin sheet. The thickness of the front panel 2 is greater than that of the rear panel 3 so that a joint 5 is directed to an instrument panel when the air bag is deployed.
