A heat and oxidation stabilized polymeric article, preferably fiber or film, is prepared by applying to the article a composition which comprises effective amounts of a nitrogen-containing antioxidant and a compatible carrier. When the composition is applied as a process finish, the carrier is a lubricant which is the reaction product of an alkylene oxide with a compound selected from the group consisting of a fatty acid having about 5 to 36 carbon atoms and an alcohol having about 5 to 36 carbon atoms, with the number of moles of alkylene oxide per mole of acid or alcohol ranging from 2 to 20. The stabilized article has utility in high performance applications.

Stabilized polymeric article and method of producing

A yarn finish composition is disclosed for incorporation with synthetic organic polymer yarn or yarn products to render the same oil repellent and resistant to soiling. The composition comprises (a) a quaternary ammonium salt selected from the group consisting of trialkyl dodecyl ammonium salt and cocotrialkyl ammonium salt, wherein the alkyl is methyl or ethyl and the anion is selected from the group consisting of chloride, bromide, iodide, sulfate, ethosulfate, methosulfate and mixtures thereof, and (b) a fluorochemical compound consisting of polycarboxybenzene esterified with certain partially fluorinated alcohols and with hydroxy-containing organic radicals such as 2-hydroxyethyl, glyceryl, and chlorohydryl or bromohydryl.

Soil resistant yarn finish for synthetic organic polymer yarn

A fiber finish composition, a process for treating polyester yarn therewith and polyester yarn so treated are all disclosed. The fiber finish composition, which is preferably applied as an overfinish to the yarn subsequent to drawing of the yarn, comprises about 60 to 90 weight percent of water; about 0.3 to 10 weight percent of gamma-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane; about 0.05 to 4.0 weight percent of a catalyst selected from the group consisting of urea and a solution of a cobalt, stannous, iron, nickel, zinc, manganese or chromium salt of 2-ethylhexoic acid or lauric acid in a carrier which is miscible in water; and about 6.5 to 38.6 weight percent of a compatible noncontinuous phase. The catalyst, alternatively, may form 0.00025 to 0.8 weight percent of the composition when selected from the group consisting of cobalt, manganese, iron, nickel, chromium, tin and molbydenum salts of a mono- or polyfunctional organic acid wherein each acid function moiety has 4 to 30 carbon atoms; the catalyst in this instance is added to the nonaqueous portion of the overfinish prior to formation of the oil in water emulsion. The yarn is preferably used in reinforcing rubber, for example in cords for the construction of pneumatic passenger tires or conveyor belts, and results in excellent adhesion of the cord to rubber.

Polyester yarn finish composition

An oil-in-water yarn finish composition, a process for treating yarn therewith and yarn so treated are all disclosed. The finish composition is preferably applied as an overfinish to the yarn. The nonaqueous portion of the composition comprises transesterified high oleic oil and high lauric oil; polyoxyalkylene castor oil; triglycerol monooleate and/or triglycerol dioleate; decaglycerol tetraoleate and/or decaglycerol pentaoleate; 4,4' butylidene-bis(6-tert-butyl-m-cresol); an emulsion stabilizer selected from the group consisting of a salt of dialkyl sulfosuccinate neat wherein each alkyl group comprises 8 to 18 carbon atoms, a salt of dialkyl sulfosuccinate in solution or mixture wherein each alkyl group comprises 9 to 18 carbon atoms, a mixture of a salt of dioctyl sulfosuccinate and a salt of an aromatic carboxylic acid; and a silane having the structural formula ##STR1## wherein n=2 to 5.

Stabilized finish composition

An aqueous spin finish, a process for treating polyamide yarn therewith and polyamide yarn so treated are all disclosed. The oil portion of the spin finish comprises a glyceride, ethoxylated oleyl alcohol, ethoxylated nonyl phenol, ethoxylated castor oil, an oxidized polyethylene, a non-nitrogen nonionic emulsifier for the oxidized polyethylene, and an alkali hydroxide. The spin finish has a pH of about 7 to 12. The spin finish has improved thermal stability which results in lower emissions during treatment of tire cord formed from polyamide yarn treated with the spin finish. Cord to rubber adhesion is also improved.

Polyamide yarn spin finish containing a glyceride and oxidized

An aqueous spin finish, a process for treating polyamide yarn therewith and polyamide yarn so treated are all disclosed. The oil portion of the spin finish comprises a rearranged glyceride, ethoxylated oleyl alcohol, ethoxylated nonyl phenol, ethoxylated castor oil, an oxidized polyethylene, a non-nitrogen nonionic emulsifier for the oxidized polyethylene, and an alkali hydroxide. The spin finish has a pH of about 7 to 12. The spin finish has improved thermal stability which results in lower emissions during treatment of tire cord formed from polyamide yarn treated with the spin finish. Cord to rubber adhesion is also improved.

Emulsion and several spin finishes are disclosed for incorporation with synthetic organic polymer yarn or yarn products to render the same oil repellent and resistant to soiling. The emulsions and spin finishes all include a yarn finish composition which comprises (a) a solution of a salt of dioctyl sulfosuccinate, propylene glycol and water, and (b) a fluorochemical compound consisting of polycarboxybenzene esterified with certain partially fluorinated alcohols and with hydroxyl-containing organic radicals such as 2-hydroxyethyl, glyceryl, and chlorohydryl or bromohydryl.

An improved multifilament polyethylene terephthalate yarn is prepared by first applying to the yarn a liquid composition comprising hexadecyl stearate, refined coconut oil, ethoxylated tallow amine, ethoxylated lauryl alcohol, sodium salt of alkylarylsulfonate, dinonyl-sodium-sulfosuccinate, and a mineral oil, and then applying to the yarn a liquid composition which is an oil-in-water emulsion, the oil portion of which comprises coconut oil, polyoxyethylene hydrogenated castor oil, and phosphated polyoxyethylated tridecyl alcohol neutralized with potassium hydroxide. The yarn is preferably used in tire cords for the construction of pneumatic passenger tires and results in excellent adhesion of tire cord to rubber.

Production of polyester yarn

A yarn finish composition is disclosed for incorporation with synthetic organic polymer yarn or yarn products to render the same oil repellent and resistant to soiling. The composition comprises (a) a solution of a salt of dioctyl sulfosuccinate, propylene glycol and water, and (b) a fluorochemical compound consisting of polycarboxybenzene esterified with certain partially fluorinated alcohols and with hydroxyl-containing organic radicals such as 2-hydroxyethyl, glyceryl, and chlorohydryl or bromohydryl.

Several spin finishes are disclosed for incorporation with synthetic organic polymer yarn or yarn products to render the same oil repellent and resistant to soiling. All of the spin finishes include a yarn finish composition which comprises (a) a nonhomogeneous mixture of a salt of dinonyl sulfosuccinate, a salt of dimethyl naphthalene sulfonate, and ammonium perfluoroalkyl carboxylate, and (b) a fluorochemical compound consisting of polycarboxybenzene esterified with certain partially fluorinated alcohols and with hydroxy-containing organic radicals such as 2-hydroxyethyl, glyceryl, and chlorohydryl or bromohydryl.

Application of fluorocarbon compound to synthetic organic polymer yarn

An improved spin finish particularly for polyamide yarn to be processed into tire cord, comprising an oil in water emulsion, said oil portion consisting essentially of specified proportions of an oxidized polyethylene wax, a white mineral oil having a viscosity of 300 to 500 S.U.S. at 100.degree. F., a polyoxyethylene oleyl phosphate, and a sulfonated succinic acid ester of decyl alcohol, said oil in water emulsion being adjusted to pH 7.1 to 8.0 with sodium hydroxide.

Spin finish for polyamide yarn

A spin finish composition for polyamide yarn to be processed into plied, bulked, continuous filament carpet yarn, comprising coconut oil, polyoxyethylene hydrogenated castor oil and the potassium salt of polyoxyethylene tridecyl alcohol phosphate. This finish improves processing of the yarn at high temperature, as by steam jet texturing, and prevents excessive tension build-up during subsequent cabling operations.

Spin finish for polyamide carpet yarn

In a process for producing polyethylene terephthalate yarn wherein a liquid finish is applied to the yarn, said process involving spinning and drawing steps, the improvement comprising first applying to the yarn prior to said drawing step a liquid finish composition consisting essentially of a polyalkylene glycol compound which is a mixed polyoxyethylated-polyoxypropylated monoether prepared in accordance with the equation: ##STR1## where R is an alkyl group having 1 to 8 carbon atoms, x and y are the number of moles of propylene oxide and ethylene oxide respectively and wherein ethylene oxide comprises 40 to 60 percent by weight of the combined total of ethylene oxide and propylene oxide and x+y has a value to produce a molecular weight of from 300 to 1,000, and then applying to said yarn after said drawing step a liquid finish composition consisting essentially of about 70 to 95 parts by weight of said mixed polyoxyethylated-polyoxypropylated monoether, about 5 to 30 parts by weight of a silane having the structural formula: ##STR2## wherein n =2 to 5, and a sufficient amount of a water-soluble alkaline catalyst to adjust the pH of the finish composition to 8-10.

Production of polyester tire yarn

Synthetic filamentary yarn comprised of polyethylene terephthalate filaments which are first treated with a liquid composition consisting essentially of refined coconut oil, about 10 to 20 weight percent of said composition of a stearic acid ester of a branched chain alcohol having 14-15 carbon atoms, ethoxylated tallow amine, ethoxylated lauryl alcohol, sodium salt of alkylarylsulfonate, dinonyl-sodium-sulfosuccinate, and white mineral oil having a boiling point of between 510.degree. and 620.degree. F., and then treated with a liquid composition consisting essentially of a compound selected from the group consisting of glycerol monooleate and decaglycerol tetraoleate with ethoxylated tall oil fatty acids, a compound selected from the group consisting of sulfated glycerol trioleate and ethoxylated tallow amine, and a stearic acid ester of a branched chain alcohol having 14-15 carbon atoms.

Polyester filamentary yarns

In a process for producing polyethylene terephthalate yarn, particularly for tire cords, wherein a liquid finish is applied to the yarn, said process involving spinning and drawing steps, the improvement comprising: (a) first applying to the yarn prior to said drawing step a liquid finish composition consisting essentially of a polyalkylene glycol compound which is a mixed polyoxyethylated-polyoxypropylated monoether prepared in accordance with the equation: ##STR1## where R is an alkyl group having 1 to 8 carbon atoms, x and y are the number of moles of propylene oxide and ethylene oxide respectively and wherein ethylene oxide comprises 40 to 60 percent by weight of the combined total of ethylene oxide and propylene oxide and x+y has a value to produce a molecular weight of from 300 to 1,000; and then (b) applying to said yarn after said drawing step a liquid finish composition consisting essentially of about 70 to 95 parts by weight of said mixed polyoxyethylated-polyoxypropylated monoether, about 5 to 30 parts by weight of a silane having the structural formula: ##STR2## wherein n = 2 to 5, and a sufficient amount of a water-soluble alkaline catalyst to adjust the pH of the finish composition to 8-10.
