In one embodiment, a magnetic head includes a main pole configured to emit a recording magnetic field for affecting a magnetic medium, the main pole configured to serve as a first electrode and having a front portion at an air bearing surface (ABS) of the magnetic head and a rear portion extending from the front portion in an element height direction perpendicular to the ABS, wherein an upper surface of the front portion of the main pole is angled with respect to a plane of deposition at a first angle of inclination of greater than 0&#xb0;, and wherein at least a portion of an upper surface of the rear portion of the main pole is angled at a first angle of declination greater than 0&#xb0; with respect to the plane of deposition, an upper shield positioned above the main pole, the upper shield configured to serve as a second electrode, and a microwave oscillator positioned between the main pole and the upper shield at the ABS.

In one embodiment, a magnetic recording head includes: a main pole configured to generate a magnetic field for recording data on a magnetic recording medium; an oscillation device positioned above the main pole in a track direction, the oscillation device being configured to generate a high-frequency magnetic field; a magnetic capping layer positioned above the oscillation device in the track direction, the magnetic layer having a front region at a media facing side (MFS) of the magnetic recording head and a rear region positioned behind the front region in an element height direction, wherein a thickness of the front region of the magnetic capping layer is less than a thickness of the rear region thereof; and a trailing shield positioned above the magnetic capping layer in the track direction.

Magnetic capping layer structure for a spin torque oscillator

A magnetic write head having a write pole with a tapered trailing edge and a magnetic oscillator formed on the trailing edge of the write pole. The magnetic oscillator is sandwiched between the magnetic write pole and a trailing magnetic shield. The write head also includes a non-magnetic, electrically conductive bump structure located over a back portion of the magnetic oscillator between the magnetic oscillator and the trailing magnetic shield. The presence of the non-magnetic, electrically conductive bump structure causes electrons to properly flow through the magnetic oscillator in a direction that is generally perpendicular to the plane of the magnetic oscillator, even when the magnetic oscillator is formed on an inclined plane on the tapered trailing edge of the write pole. This thereby ensures optimal performance of the magnetic oscillator.

Magnetic recording head with non-magnetic bump structure formed on spin torque oscillator

A microwave-assisted magnetic recording (MAMR) write head includes a yoke structure with a main pole, a flux return pole, and a trailing magnetic shield. The main pole includes a write pole with a tip at the disk-facing surface, a sub pole with an end recessed from the disk-facing surface and an electrically insulating layer between the write pole and the sub pole. The spin-torque oscillator (STO) is located at the disk-facing surface between the trailing shield and the write pole tip. The insulating layer assures that the STO current is not shorted between the return pole and the write pole. The insulating layer between the write pole and the sub pole increases the area of the junction between the return pole and write pole, which reduces the magnetic reluctance of the yoke structure.

In one embodiment, a magnetic head includes a main pole configured to write data to a magnetic medium using a magnetic field, a return pole positioned above the main pole at a media-facing surface of the magnetic head, the return pole being configured to return magnetic flux from the main pole after it has exited a magnetic medium, and a coil configured to produce magnetic flux in the main pole, the coil being positioned below the return pole, wherein a film thickness of a first turn of the coil on a media-facing surface side thereof is less than a film thickness of a second turn of the coil. Shield structure for reducing the magnetic induction rate of the trailing shield and systems thereof

Embodiments of the invention reduce the throat height of a single pole type head with high accuracy. In one embodiment, a head with an electro lapping guide for controlling a write head's throat height during air bearing surface processing is made. Air bearing surface processing is performed using the electro lapping guide. For a read head, processing is performed using the read head itself or an electro lapping guide for the read head so that both the throat height of write head and the element height of read head are controlled.

A perpendicular recording magnetic head is provided, according to one embodiment, in which even if a thickness of a main pole is reduced corresponding to a reduction in a recording track width, recording performance is not degraded. A magnetic-field auxiliary pole and a nonmagnetic layer are stacked on a main pole, and a nonmagnetic portion is provided on each side face on a flying surface side of the magnetic-field auxiliary pole and the nonmagnetic layer, in one approach. In all regions except for a region near a flying surface, an interval between the main pole and a shield is increased by the nonmagnetic portion and the nonmagnetic layer, so that magnetic field loss is prevented, and consequently magnetic field strength and a magnetic field gradient are increased. Other systems and methods are also disclosed for retaining magnetic recording performance while reducing a thickness of a main pole.

Perpendicular recording magnetic head with a varying interval between the main pole and the shield, and methods of manufacturing thereof

A recording head having a narrowed track has a high recording magnetic field strength and a high recording magnetic field gradient has certain problems which may be difficult to overcome. In one embodiment, a magnetic film, which overhangs from a track width, is provided on a trailing side of a. region retracted from an ABS of a main pole facing a recording medium. Thereby, a magnetic field strength on the trailing side is increased so that a difference in distribution of magnetic field strength defined by a geometrical bevel angle given to the main pole is increased. Consequently, writing performance of the main pole is improved while forming a large magnetic clearance angle with respect to an adjacent track and suppresses writing into an adjacent track when skew occurs. Other systems and methods are also disclosed regarding a head with a high recording magnetic field using an overhanging magnetic film.

Perpendicular magnetic recording head having a magnetic layer overhanging a trailing side of a main pole and method of manufacture thereof

Embodiments of the present invention help to suppress broadening of a write field of a main pole of a perpendicular recording head and realize high-quality write operation. According to one embodiment, a main pole of a write head extends to an air bearing surface or a medium-facing surface and has an inverted trapezoid in cross-section. First soft magnetic films called side shields are separately disposed through a nonmagnetic film on both sides of the main pole. The air bearing surface side end of the first soft magnetic film is provided to recede from the air bearing surface. The first soft magnetic film and the main pole are formed in the same layer. A second soft magnetic film called a trailing shield is provided above the main pole on the air bearing surface side via a nonmagnetic film.

An optically assisted magnetic recording head causes light to be efficiently incident on a near-field light generating element and is thereby capable of efficiently generating near-field light. The optically assisted magnetic recording head, according to one embodiment, has a waveguide and a thin metal film. The waveguide has a core and a clad at least partially surrounding the core and serves as near-field light generating device. The core has a plate-shaped portion that has a small width and protrudes from an edge of the core. The edge of the core is located on the air bearing surface side. The thin metal film is provided on an upper portion and side portions of the plate-shaped portion to cover the edge of the core at the air bearing surface side. Other systems and methods are disclosed as well to achieve efficient incident light on a near-field light generating element.

In one embodiment, a perpendicular magnetic head includes a main magnetic pole, a trailing shield, and a multilayered side/leading shield disposed on a leading side of the main magnetic pole in a down-track direction and on either side of the main magnetic pole in a cross-track direction. The side/leading shield includes an inner layer nearer to the main magnetic pole which surrounds the main magnetic pole on three sides and an outer layer farther from the main magnetic pole than the inner layer which surrounds the main magnetic pole and inner layer on three sides. The inner layer has a saturation magnetization (Ms) that is greater than a Ms of the outer layer, and the trailing shield has a relative permeability of greater than about 50. Other magnetic heads and methods of producing magnetic heads are also presented according to various embodiments.

Embodiments of the invention are directed to narrowing a read/write gap of a perpendicular magnetic head by applying a wrap around shield, data erasing from return pole edges by returning recording field, and reducing TPR of a magnetic material. In one embodiment, the wrap around shields are formed by partitioning and making Gd, which is the height of the shield at the main pole side in the sensor height direction, smaller than the height of the shield connected to the return pole in the sensor height direction.
