An allergen inactivating agent is provided which has no adverse effects on the human body and which does not cause problems such as color development. An allergen inactivating agent containing a polysaccharide derivative as its effective component, wherein said polysaccharide derivative has a cellulose ether or a starch ether as its backbone, and some or all of hydrogen atoms in the hydroxy group of the polysaccharide derivative are substituted by a group represented by the following general formula (1):-E-(OA)-E-R&#x2003;&#x2003;(1)wherein Erepresents an alkylene containing 1 to 6 carbon atoms optionally substituted with hydroxy group or oxo group; n represents a number of 0 to 50; A independently represents an alkylene containing 1 to 6 carbon atoms, the number of A being n; Erepresents ether bond or oxycarbonyl group; R represents an alkyl group containing 4 to 30 carbon atoms optionally substituted with hydroxy group, a sulfoalkyl group containing 1 to 5 carbon atoms optionally substituted with hydroxy group, or a salt thereof.

Allergen inactivating agent

This invention relates to IL-4 production inhibitors, antiallergic agents and atopic dermatitis preventives and improvers, each of which contains at one or more compounds selected from the group consisting of hydroxyl-containing monoterpenes, hydroxyl-containing sesquiterpenes and their acylated derivatives. This invention is also concerned with IL-4 production inhibitors, antiallergic agents and atopic dermatitis preventives and improvers, each of which contains an essential oil such as cedarwood oil. This invention is also concerned with bath medicine compositions, each of which contains one or more ingredients selected from cedrol, cedrenol, farnesol, patchouli alcohol and vetiverol.

A 21-substituted steroid compound is disclosed. The compound has a structure of formula (I), ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 is a hydrogen atom, a lower alkyl, lower alkenyl, lower alkoxy, or phenyl group, R.sup.2 is a hydroxyl group or an acyloxy group having 1-6 carbon atoms, R.sup.3 is a hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl group, or R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 may together form a lower alkylidenedioxy group, X.sup.1 and X.sup.2 may be the same or different and individually represents a hydrogen atom or a halogen atom, Y.sup.1 and Y.sup.2 may be the same or different and individually represents a methylene group or a sulfur atom, Z is a sulfur atom or an imino group, the wave line means that the configuration of R.sup.3 may be of either .alpha. or .beta., and dotted line between the 1 and 2 position means that the bond may be the double bond. It has excellent anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic and anti-asthma activities with little side effects, and is useful for the prevention, cure, and treatment of on inflammation, allergic diseases, rheumatism, and the like.

A novel melanin inhibitor comprising as an active component a p-hydroxycinnamamide derivative of the following general formula (I) ##STR1## in which R.sub.1 represents a hydrogen atom or a 2-hydroxyethyl group, and R.sub.2 represents a hydroxymethyl group or a carboxyl group. The melanin inhibitor may take various forms such as a lotion, an emulsion, a cream, an ointment, a gel and the like, and it is locally applied onto affected parts such as spots and freckles on the skin, and a pigmental deposition after sunburn.

A novel process for preparing a 3-phenacylidene phthalide of the general formula (II) ##STR1## which comprises reacting a halogenating reagent with a 2-carboxydibenzoylmethane. The 2-carboxydibenzoylmethane can be inexpensively prepared, so that the 3-phenacylidene phthalides which are useful as a growth regulant for plants and a safering agent to reduce herbicidal injury to plants can be readily obtained economically in high yield.

2-Carboxydibenzoylmethanes of the following formula ##STR1## in which R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are independently a substituent joined to any position of the benzene nucleus and represent a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom, a linear or branched alkyl or alkenyl group having from 1 to 18 carbon atoms, or a linear or branched, saturated or unsaturated alkoxy group having from 1 to 18 carbon atoms, m is an integer of from 1 to 4, and n is an integer of from 1 to 5 are prepared inexpensively with ease in high yield by a novel process characterized by reaction between phthalic anhydrides and acetophenones in the presence of bases. The 2-carboxydibenzoylmethanes are useful as an inhibitor of the root geotropic response of plants or a growth regulator for plants, or a stabilizer for halogen-containing resins.
