A communication apparatus for processing a fax signal and an audio signal includes an audio compression unit for compressing the audio signal, a fax-termination/switching control unit for terminating the fax signal and for executing control to prevent the fax signal from being compressed by the audio compression unit, a detection unit for detecting a predetermined negotiation signal used in a negotiation procedure for a fax communication from an input signal before compression within a fixed period of time starting at the beginning of the negotiation signal and an exclusion processing unit for carrying out an exclusion process on the negotiation signal upon detection of the negotiation signal.

A multiplexer is provided for making data into a plurality of cells and then for transmitting the plurality of cells through a cell transmission path. The multiplexer includes a first delay-fluctuation adding unit adding a first maximum value of delay fluctuation occurring when the multiplexer transmits the cell, to a predetermined area of the cell; a second delay-fluctuation adding unit adding a second maximum value of delay fluctuation occurring when the multiplexer reproduces the data from the cell, to the predetermined area; a storage unit storing the data; and a data-read control unit controlling reading the data stored in the storage unit by following a maximum value of delay fluctuation stored in the predetermined area. Accordingly, the multiplexer can control absorption of the delay fluctuation individually for each cell transmission path.

A package for performing mutual conversion between a first signaling signal and a second signaling signal, including a first signaling signal converting unit for outputting mutually converted first and second signaling signals and outputting a current state information based on preceding state information and current first and second signaling signals; a second signaling state holding unit for holding the current state information up to the next frame; and a timer unit for detecting that a current state information matching with the predetermined state information appears and outputting a time-out signal after an elapse of a predetermined time.
