The display device includes a liquid crystal panel including a polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) layer and a light source, the PDLC layer containing a polymer network and liquid crystal components dispersed in the polymer network, the light source being apart from the liquid crystal panel with an air layer, and configured to emit light toward the liquid crystal panel from an oblique direction, the end portion and the central portion of the PDLC layer each having, in the scattering state, an angle dependence which changes a transmittance of light to be emitted from a front surface based on an angle at which light is incident on a back surface of the PDLC layer, with the angle dependence of the end portion being different from the angle dependence of the central portion, the light source irradiating the end portion and the central portion with light at different angles.

Display device

A liquid crystal display device is manufactured at a low cost. In the liquid crystal display device, three sub-pixel electrodes are connected by inter-electrode connection portions to form one pixel electrode. One TFT is connected to the pixel electrode. A screen of a liquid crystal display panel is divided into n (n&#x2265;2) of areas. Gate signal lines G of each divided area are scanned simultaneously one line at a time in each divided area. A backlight device emits light after completion of the scanning of each divided area.

Liquid crystal display device with time-division driving

A liquid crystal display device includes sub-pixel electrodes respectively provided to three sub-pixels, and an interelectrode connection portion that connects sub-pixel electrodes adjacent to each other among the sub-pixel electrodes. The interelectrode connection portion is provided in a position where boundaries of liquid crystal alignment directions of sub-pixels adjacent to each other are connected.

Liquid crystal display device

A liquid crystal display device including first and second substrates, a liquid crystal layer, a pixel electrode, a counter electrode, a first molecule orientation film formed on the first substrate so as to cover the pixel electrode, and a second molecule orientation film formed on the second substrate so as to cover the counter electrode. The pixel electrode includes first micro-electrode patterns extending in a first direction, second micro-electrode patterns extending in a second direction, third micro-electrode patterns extending in a third direction and fourth micro-electrode patterns extending in a fourth direction, wherein the first, second, third and fourth directions are different from one another. When a driving voltage is applied between the pixel and counter electrodes, liquid crystal molecules that are located at the first, second, third and fourth micro-electrode patterns are tilted parallel to a corresponding one of the first, second, third and fourth directions, respectively, when viewed in a plan view.

Liquid crystal display device and method for fabricating the same

A liquid crystal display device including first and second substrates, and a liquid crystal layer sealed therebetween. The device also includes a first electrode formed on the first substrate and a second electrode formed on the second substrate; a first molecule orientation film formed on the first substrate so as to cover the first electrode; a second molecule orientation film formed on the second substrate so as to cover the second electrode; a plurality of micro structures associated with at least one of the first and second electrodes; and a plurality of rough structural patterns associated with at least one of the first and second electrodes. At least some of the micro structures extend generally parallel to each other, and the rough structural patterns extend in directions different from directions in which the micro structures extend.

A liquid crystal display device including first and second substrates, with a liquid crystal layer sealed therebetween. The device also includes a first electrode formed on the first substrate, a second electrode formed on the second substrate, a first molecule orientation film formed on the first substrate so as to cover the first electrode, a second molecule orientation film formed on the second substrate so as to cover the second electrode, and a plurality of micro structures associated with at least one of the first and second electrodes, wherein at least some of the micro structures extend generally parallel to each other. When a driving voltage is applied between the first and second electrodes, liquid crystal molecules of the liquid crystal layer are oriented such that no dark line occurs in a vicinity of the plurality of micro structures and no dark line occurs between adjacent micro structures.

A liquid crystal display including a pair of substrates; a plurality of electrodes formed in a matrix on one of the pair of substrates, wherein each of the plurality of electrodes includes a plurality of stripe-like portions that define a plurality of spaces therebetween; polymer material and liquid crystal between the pair of substrates; and polymer alignment films which are formed on each of the substrates and are affected by light irradiation and cause alignment of the liquid crystal in predetermined directions. The plurality of stripe-like portions extend in at least two different directions which are not parallel to each other.

Liquid crystal display and method of manufacturing the same

A liquid crystal display has a pair of substrates with liquid crystal sealed between them. A polymer layer regulates directions in which the liquid crystal molecules tilt. A plurality of gate bus lines and a plurality of drain bus lines are provided on one of the substrates. Color filters and a pixel electrode are provided on the substrate. The pixel electrode includes a first sub-pixel electrode and a second sub-pixel electrode. A common electrode is provided on the other substrate. A first and a second thin film transistor are connected to the first sub-pixel electrode. The first thin film transistors is connected to a first gate bus line, and the second thin film transistor is connected to a second bus line.

Liquid crystal display

A liquid crystal display including two substrates arranged opposite to each other; a liquid crystal sealed between the substrates; and a polymer layer for regulating a pretilt angle of liquid crystal molecules and/or tilt directions at a time of driving. One of the substrates has a color filter layer formed on a side of the one substrate, and a plurality of stripe-like electrode patterns are provided on the color filter layer. The patterns are periodically arranged so that when polymerizable components mixed in the liquid crystal layer are polymerized to form the polymer layer while a voltage is applied to the liquid crystal layer between the electrode patterns and a second electrode on the other substrate, liquid crystal molecules in the liquid crystal layer are aligned in the extending directions of stripe-like electrode patterns.

A substrate for a liquid crystal display device, including a pixel electrode formed on the substrate, wherein the pixel electrode includes a micro-cutout pattern defined by a plurality of micro-cutouts extending in four different directions with respect to an extension direction of a rough structural pattern. The substrate also includes a first electrode extending in a first direction, a second electrode extending in a second direction that is approximately perpendicular to the first direction, and a contact hole that electrically connects the pixel electrode and the first electrode. A portion of the rough structural pattern and/or a portion of the micro-cutout pattern overlap the first electrode. Also disclosed is a liquid crystal display device including such a substrate.

Liquid crystal display device and substrate for liquid crystal display device

A liquid crystal display device including first and second substrates, with a liquid crystal layer sealed therebetween; and first and second electrodes formed, respectively, on the first and second substrates. A first molecule orientation film is formed on the first substrate so as to cover the first electrode and a second molecule orientation film formed on the second substrate so as to cover the second electrode. A polarizer with a light absorption axis P is provided outside of the first substrate, and an analyzer with a light absorption axis A is provided outside of the second substrate. The light absorption axis A crosses the light absorption axis P. A plurality of micro structures are associated with at least one of the first and second electrodes, wherein the micro structures are obliquely arranged with respect to the light absorption axis P and the light absorption axis A.

A liquid crystal display device includes an alignment sustaining layer formed of a photopolymerized material on each of surfaces of a pair of alignment films which are closer to a liquid crystal layer. The alignment sustaining layer is configured to regulate a pretilt azimuth of a liquid crystal molecule of the liquid crystal layer during absence of an applied voltage. A nematic liquid crystal material of the liquid crystal layer comprise a liquid crystal compound having a terphenyl ring system as an indispensable component, and the liquid crystal layer further comprises part of a photopolymerizable compound. A content of the photopolymerizable compound relative to the nematic liquid crystal material is less than 0.015 mol %.

A liquid crystal display device of the present invention includes: a liquid crystal layer containing a nematic liquid crystal material; a pair of electrodes opposing each other via the liquid crystal layer; a pair of alignment films respectively provided between the pair of electrodes and the liquid crystal layer; and an alignment sustaining layer formed of a photopolymerized material on each of surfaces of the pair of alignment films which are closer to the liquid crystal layer, the alignment sustaining layer being configured to regulate a pretilt azimuth of a liquid crystal molecule of the liquid crystal layer during the absence of an applied voltage across the liquid crystal layer, wherein the pretilt azimuth of the liquid crystal molecule of the liquid crystal layer is regulated by the alignment sustaining layer during the absence of an applied voltage across the liquid crystal layer. The nematic liquid crystal material contains a liquid crystal compound having a terphenyl ring system as an indispensable component, and the liquid crystal layer further contains part of a photopolymerizable compound which is a source material of the photopolymerized material, a content of the photopolymerizable compound relative to the nematic liquid crystal material being less than 0.015 mol %.

A liquid crystal display device including first and second substrates, with a liquid crystal layer including liquid crystal molecules between the first and second substrates. A first electrode formed on the first substrate and a second electrode formed on the second substrate. An alignment layer is formed on at least one of the substrates, and a polymer is formed on the alignment layer. The liquid crystal molecules are tilted when no voltage is applied to the liquid crystal molecules. The first electrode has a plurality of stripe-like electrode patterns, and the stripe-like electrode patterns have a width that is wider than a width of a space between adjacent strip-like electrode patterns.

A liquid crystal display including two substrates, gate bus lines, liquid crystal molecules, and a polymer that determines directions in which the liquid crystal molecules tilt. A plurality of divisional areas are arranged on one of the substrates. The pixels are aligned in a column between drain bus lines. A pixel electrode is formed at each of the divisional areas. A first thin film transistor drives a first divisional area, and a second thin film transistor drives a second divisional area of the same column. The first and second thin film transistors are electrically connected to the same gate bus line. Either the pixel electrodes formed at each of the divisional areas are electrically insulated from each other, or they are connected to each other through a high resistance. A first threshold voltage within the first divisional area is different from a second threshold voltage of the second divisional area.
