A tampon is proposed, with an insertion end and a rear end, made from a pressed absorbent strip () and a withdrawal string () running out of the rear end. In order to achieve short production times during manufacture of the tampon, the withdrawal string () is placed around the strip () in the shape of a loop, and the strip () is provided with a fold () at each side of the loop (). In terms of a method suitable for producing a tampon, the following steps are proposed:

The invention relates to a method for a shaping step completing a process for producing a tampon () which is produced of an absorbent material. At least one groove () is embossed onto the peripheral surface by radially compressing, preferably under thermal influence, at least one region of the tampon () extending along a peripheral surface of the tampon (), the groove plane substantially extending normal to the longitudinal extension of the tampon.

The invention relates to a press () for producing a tampon () by radially pressing an absorbent material by means of compression jaws () which have respective penetrating segments () for embossing grooves () into the absorbent material, one compression jaw () the penetrating segment () of which is designed as a strip having flat lateral faces projecting into the compression space and one compression jaw (') the penetrating segment (&#x2032;) of which is designed as a rib having undulated lateral faces projecting into the compression space being alternately arranged. A projection of the strip onto a peripheral surface of the tampon () present in the compression space represents a straight line and a projection of the undulated rib onto the peripheral surface represents an undulated line.

A method is proposed for producing a tampon (T) packaged in a protective sleeve made from a preform (V) which is preferably formed by winding a strip of fibrous non-woven material. The preform (V) is shaped to form the tampon in separate pressing stages by pressure forces acting on it from outside, and is individually packaged by providing it with a film sleeve () tightly enclosing the tampon (T) serving as a protective sleeve. In order to reduce the complexity involved in producing a tampon, and in particular a non-round tampon, to the point at which its is individually packaged in the protective sleeve, the substantially cylindrical preform (V) is already paced in the film sleeve () surrounding at least the external surface of the preform (V) before the final forming stage (). The preform (V) including the film sleeve () surrounding it is then fed to the final stage (), where it is formed between at least two pressing jaws () which can be displaced relative to on another until it has assumed its final non-cylindrical shape.
