A sintered molded article includes a ceramic of &#x3b1;/&#x3b2;-sialon having a grain boundary phase, the grain boundary phase containing at least one hard material formed in situ as an additional phase. A method for the production of the sintered molded article uses at least the following compounds as a starting material: SiN, AlN, and, if applicable, AlO, at least one oxide of the rare earths, and at least one oxide of the element titanium.

Zirconium oxide material and a sintered molded body produced from the material. The zirconium oxide is present in the tetragonal phase in an amount of 70 to 99.9 vol.-%. The tetragonal phase is chemically stabilized with rare-earth oxides. The sintered moldings can be used, e.g., in the medical field as implants or as dental prostheses.

Zirconia-based monophase and multiphase materials

A composite material having a first phase includes an aluminum oxide proportion of at least 65% by volume and a second phase comprising a zirconium proportion of 10 to 35% by volume. The zirconium is present as zirconium oxide. The aluminum oxide is a ceramic matrix and the zirconium oxide is dispersed therein. From 90 to 99% of the zirconium oxide is present in the tetragonal phase. A chemical stabilizer for stabilizing the tetragonal phase of the zirconium oxide is also present. The total content of chemical stabilizer is &#x3c;0.2 mol % relative to the zirconium oxide content.

A ceramic composite material and a method for producing same. The ceramic composite material has a ceramic matrix comprising zirconium oxide and at least one secondary phase dispersed therein. The matrix is composed of zirconium oxide as at least 51 vol.-% of composite material, and the secondary phase is in a proportion of 1 to 49 vol.-% of composite material, wherein 90 to 99% of the zirconium oxide is present in the tetragonal phase based on the total zirconium oxide portion. The tetragonal phase of the zirconium oxide is stabilized by at least one member selected from the group consisting of chemical stabilization and mechanical stabilization. The ceramic composite is damage-tolerant.

Hardness, ageing resistance, wetting behavior in relating to water and high thermal conductivity are known characteristics of sintered molded bodies consisting of aluminum oxide; high strength and a high resistance to cracking, i.e., damage tolerance are known characteristics of sintered molded bodies consisting of zirconium oxide. These properties are combined in a material having a large fraction of aluminum oxide, zirconium oxide and optionally strontium aluminate.

Ceramic material

A material based on SiAlON contain 70-97 vol. % of alpha and beta-SiAlON and an amorphous or partially crystalline grain boundary phase and 3 to 30 vol.% of a hard material. The material has an alpha-SiAlON gradient which decreases from the outside to the inside.

Materials based on sialon's

Zirconium dioxide containing 2 to 40 vol. % of stabilizing oxides is embedded in the matrix material of a sintered molding consisting of an aluminum oxide/chromium oxide mixed crystal. The quantity of stabilizing oxides added is chosen so that the zirconium dioxide is predominantly tetragonal. The molar ratio of the zirconium dioxide containing the stabilizing oxides to the chromium oxide is between 1000:1 and 20:1 and the zirconium dioxide has a maximum particle size of 2 .mu.m.

Sintered molding

In a valve the sealing disks in contact with one another consist of sintered silicon carbide ceramic and have on their functional surface a profile bearing percentage of at least 75% established by grinding and/or lapping and/or polishing. The mean roughness at the functional surface amounts to 0.01 to 0.1 .mu.m. The construction is especially suitable for a sanitary mixing faucet.

Combinations of frictional and sealing elements made from hard substances, such as sintered aluminum oxide, are ground and lapped at their surfaces of engagement. At least one surface has at least some micro-blurred areas. The micro-blurring is produced by chemical etching. Phosphoric acid can be used as the chemical etching, and in thermal etching, the etching temperature is between 1400.degree. and 1560.degree. C.
