The present invention provides a magnetooptic device, a magnetooptic head, and a magnetic disk drive each capable of performing optically assisted magnetic recording and each having a small size, improved recording density, and a higher transfer rate. In a magnetooptic device, a magnetic circuit including a magnetic gap and a thin film magnetic transducer having a coil portion are stacked on the surface of a semiconductor laser. By the arrangement, optically assisted magnetic recording can be performed, small size and light weight are achieved, and higher transfer rate can be implemented.

A near-field light-emitting element includes a transparent medium having a plane of incidence into which a laser beam enters, and a light-condensing plane on which the laser beam having entered the plane of incidence is concentrated, and a metal body provided on the light-condensing plane of the transparent medium having a first surface contacting the light-condensing plane, a second surface opposing the first surface, and an aperture which is formed to penetrate through the first and second surfaces at a position where the laser beam is concentrated and which emits a near-field light obtained from the laser beam. The metal body is arranged apart from a center of the aperture by a predetermined distance to connect together the first and second surfaces, and has a plasmon reflection plane that reflects toward the aperture a surface plasmon excited on the first and second surfaces by the laser beam concentrated at the aperture.

Near-field light-emitting element and optical head

A heat-assisted magnetic recording head includes a thin film magnetic transducer having a pair of yokes and generating a magnetic field in a magnetic gap between two magnetic poles at the ends of the pair of yokes, and a heater placed in the vicinity of the magnetic gap and generating heat with an electric current. A part of a magnetic recording medium in the vicinity of the magnetic gap is heated by the heater to reduce a magnetic-coercive of the part of the magnetic recording medium and the magnetic field generated by the thin film magnetic transducer is applied to the part of the magnetic recording medium.

Heat-assisted magnetic recording head and heat-assisted magnetic recording apparatus

An optical head and a disk unit are provided, in which the height and the weight of the optical head are reduced to enable a disk unit of small size and high recording density. The optical head has 2-group lenses containing a first lens arranged on a side of a semiconductor laser and a second lens arranged to face a recording layer of an optical disk, and an optical axis of the objective lens is arranged in parallel to the recording layer. The optical head can be reduced in height and the weight according to the constitution.

A lower yoke film, an insulating film supporting a thin film coil and an upper yoke film connected at a back end thereof to a back end of the lower yoke film are consecutively piled on a back end surface of a flying slider, and a magnetic pole films and a deposited at a tip end of at least one of the lower yoke film and the upper yoke film, so as to form a magnetic gap. The gap of the surface of the magnetic pole facing a magnetic recording medium is determined by the working pattern of the thin film; therefore, a magnetic pole having a high aspect ratio can be easily produced.

An optical recording medium, an optical recording and reproducing method, and an apparatus that can record and reproduce multilevel information at a high density and with a high S/N ratio. Recording light emitted from a light source is collimated by a collimation lens and introduced into a polarization rotary device. Recording light transmitted by the polarization rotary device is focused by an objective lens onto an optical recording medium. In response, a photo-induced birefringence is recorded on the optical recording medium. Multilevel recording is performed by controlling a voltage applied to the polarization rotary device to change a polarization angle &#x3b8; of recording light. Reproduction is performed by detecting light reflected from the optical recording medium with an analyzer and a detector.

Optical recording medium, optical recording and reproducing method and apparatus

There is provided an optical reproduction apparatus and an optical recording and reproduction apparatus which can improve a CNR and can read at high speed. The center portion of a laser light emitted from a semiconductor laser is shaded by a light shading portion of a first light shade, and its peripheral portion is condensed and irradiates a super-resolution film of an optical disk. The center portion of a reflected light from the optical disk is mainly made of a signal component, and a noise component almost disappears. Thus, the reflected light from the optical disk is separated into the center portion and its peripheral portion, and the reflected light made of the signal component of the center portion is used for signal reproduction, so that the CNR can be increased.

The flying recording head is manufactured by forming a semiconductor laser oscillation region by growing a semiconductor crystal on a rear end surface of a substrate made of a single crystal such as sapphire, and forming a air bearing surface in an output surface of the semiconductor laser and the substrate.

The present invention provides a recording/reproducing head, a recording/reproducing disk, and a recording/reproducing disk apparatus that are capable of high density recording, cost reduction, easy tracking control, and high speed seek operation. A collimated beam that is incident onto an incident surface of a transparent condensing medium is reflected on a reflecting film formed on the surface of a reflecting surface to condense on a second surface, and a beam spot is formed near the end of the second surface. The beam condensed on the beam spot leaks as a near field wave and is propagated to a magneto-optic recording film of a recording/reproducing disk, and information is OAM-recorded cooperatively with the magnetic field of a coil. In reproduction of the information, a leakage magnetic flux that comes from the recording film is detected by a magnetic sensor.

A laser beam emitted from a semiconductor laser enters an incident surface of a transparent condensing medium with a central part of the laser beam being shielded by a shading metal member, and a light spot is formed on a light-condensed surface of the transparent condensing medium. When this light spot is applied to a micro metal member, plasmon of the micro metal member is excited, and near field light leaks out therefrom. The near field light enters a recording medium of a disk as propagation light, and record into and reproduction from the recording medium is performed by this light. By shielding the central part of the laser beam, it is possible to prevent the propagation light from being generated from the light-condensed surface of the transparent condensing medium, and to prevent erroneous reproduction caused by the propagation light.

An optical head which implements high recording density of a recording medium and which is miniaturized in size and improved in data transfer rate, a disk apparatus, and a method for manufacturing the optical head are provided. A laser beam is emitted from a semiconductor laser, the laser beam is collimated by the collimator lens to a collimated beam and reflected by a mirror, condensed by an condense lens, and incident to an incident surface of a transparent condensing medium. The condensed beam which was incident to the incident surface is refracted by the incident surface, the refracted beam is condensed on a condense surface, a beam spot is formed on the condense surface, and a near field wave leaks from a slit. The near field wave leaked from the slit propagates in a recording layer of a recording. The beam is served for recording/reproduction on the recording layer.
