An apparatus and method for coding and decoding digital video images, capable of maintaining the quality of static regions, such as background images, in decoded pictures even when the resolution of pictures has been changed from high to low. The apparatus is equipped with two storage units, low-resolution and high-resolution picture storage units, to hold reference pictures in two different picture formats. When processing coded blocks (or blocks having at least one non-zero transform coefficient), a high-resolution picture updating unit converts corresponding blocks of a low-resolution reference picture retrieved from the low-resolution picture storage unit to obtain high-resolution block images. It then updates a high-resolution picture stored in the high-resolution picture storage unit with the obtained high-resolution block images. This updating operation is not applied on non-coded blocks. As a result, only active regions corresponding to the coded blocks are updated within the picture stored in the high-resolution picture storage unit, while the remaining part, which may possibly be static background images, is preserved without losing their high visual quality.

Apparatus and method for coding and decoding video images

A data transfer control device and controlling method in which data on a storage medium is read continuously. The data transfer control device includes M storage units each for storing respectively at least two kinds of different data among N kinds of data in memory regions, a transmission control element for transmitting the N kinds of data and a spare storage unit for storing at least one kind of data among said N kinds of data. The transfer control device includes a judging element for judging whether accessing any one of the M storage units must be halted. Switching element for switching a memory region to the spare storage unit and the remaining (M-1) storage unit when the judging element judges that accessing must be halted and then the switching element performs an accessing operation. The data transfer control device can suppress an increase in the device forming cost, power consumption, and installation area, and can increase the amount of data which can be stored according to the number of storage units installed.

An image encoding control system includes an orthogonal transform encoder for carrying out orthogonal transform coding for each block which includes transform coefficients related to a plurality of blocks, each block obtained by dividing one picture of an input image signal into the plurality of blocks, a code control for controlling the transform coefficients obtained for each block so that the number of variable-length code words obtained for each block is equal to or smaller than a predetermined number of variable-length code words, a variable-length encoder for converting the transform coefficients obtained for each block into variable-length code words, and a buffer memory for temporarily storing the variable-length code words output by the variable-length encoder for each block.

An image encoding and transmitting system is an image transmission system for transmitting digital data such as TV telephones. The system for dividing input frame data into a plurality of blocks before transmitting them comprises on its sending side an intra-frame/inter-frame determiner for receiving intra-frame data and inter-frame data and selecting either of them for output, and a difference collator for having the intra-frame/inter-frame determiner compulsorily output intra-frame data at the time of data input for the next frame when one or more data in each block forming inter-frame data are larger than a predetermined threshold. The system also comprises on its receiving side an picture element domain frame data storage for storing received data in the picture element domain, and a motion vector detector for detecting according to the contents in the storage a motion vector using the data in the block surrounding the discarded block in order to guess the data in the discarded block.

A holographic stereogram which includes a plurality of element holograms and which reproduces a stereoscopic image by irradiation of coherent light, wherein each element hologram is loaded with a modulation value (pattern) corresponding to the stereoscopic image, the modulation value being a one-dimensional or two-dimensional transform coefficient obtained by one-dimensional or two-dimensional cosine transform or discrete cosine transform of the distribution of the intensity of diffraction light expressing the stereoscopic image, enabling simplification of the drive system of the display device displaying the stereoscopic image and reproduction of the original stereoscopic image much more faithfully.

A CPU, a main memory, a network interface section and a control section are connected to an internal bus. The control section is connected to a storage device to control read-out and write-in processes relative to the storage device. The network interface section receives an access request to the storage device transferred through a network and sends it to the control section through the CPU. The network interface section and the control section are connected to each other by an exclusive line. Data read out of the storage device and data to be written into it is transferred through the exclusive line.

A two-dimensional discrete cosine transform computing circuit has a transform block, formed by a multiplication unit and a Hadamard transform unit, which performs computations in a sequence of Hadamard transforms followed by multiplications in a two-dimensional discrete cosine transform, and in a sequence of multiplication followed by Hadamard transforms in an inverse two-dimensional discrete cosine transform. A memory block temporarily stores input/output data of the transform block; an input/output processing block performs pre-processing and post-processing such as cumulative addition and subtraction of input/output data of the transform block. A control block controls, when performing processing for either a two-dimensional discrete cosine transform or inverse two-dimensional discrete cosine transform, multiplications of coefficients in the transform block, read/write of the memory block, and the input/output processing block. This configuration achieves high-speed processing and a reduction in scale of the circuitry.

Each of processor units 31-1-31-n comprises a CPU, memory, and interface function. A high-speed communications network 32 interconnects the processor units for inter-processor communications. Each of input/output units 33-1-33-n stores multimedia data and transmits the multimedia data through the network under the control of the corresponding processor unit. A processor control unit 34 controls the process of each of the processor units 31-1-31-n according to the process request received through the network. A switch 35 connects each of the input/output units 33-1-33-n to the network and exchanges data through the network. A communications line 36 transfers an instruction, etc. from the processor control unit 34 to each of the processor units 31-1-31-n.

For an image data such as a motion picture image data composed of three hierarchical layers formed of slices, each of which having a plurality of macroblocks and one picture having a plurality of the slices, a synchronous word is adaptively inserted to each header of the slices and the picture according to a characteristic of the image data. It is possible to effectively perform the localization of errors. A synchronous word multiplexing system for coded image data inputs and codes image data, converts the coded data to a variable-length coded data, divides the image coded data into a plurality of data signals, and multiplies a synchronous word per a predetermined divided unit. Further, a timing signal for multiplexing synchronous words to the image coded data is generated based on a characteristic data, and the timing of multiplexing synchronous words is controlled based on characteristics of the image data.

Frequently occurring DCT coefficients F(u, v) are predictable. Accordingly, values f.sub.u,v,F,(u,v) (x, y) for the frequently occurring DCT coefficients are calculated and stored, in advance, in a table. Among input DCT coefficients F(u, v), only non-zero DCT coefficients are processed. It is determined whether or not the table contains values f.sub.u,v,F(u,v) (x, y) for a given non-zero DCT coefficient. If the table contains the values, they are read out of the table, and if not, they are directly calculated. The read or calculated values are added to pixels (x, y), respectively, to provide pixel values (x, y).
