A fiber/resin composite whose resin phase is formed by at least initial actinic radiation curing of a resin composition comprising an actinic radiation curable first resin component and a second resin component which is non-cured under curing conditions effective for the first resin component. The actinic radiation exposure of the fiber/resin composition effects curing of the first resin component to immobilize the composite and impart structural integrity thereto, whereby the composite may be handled, packaged, or further processed. Filament wound, braided, and pultruded articles are described, together with associated methods for forming such articles by filament winding, braiding and pultrusion. As a specific embodiment, a solid fuel rocket motor is disclosed comprising a solid fuel body in a filament wound fiber-resin composite casing formed by filament winding of the solid fuel body with resin-impregnated filament or rovings thereof.

A device e.g., an electrical or electromechanical assembly (62), comprising a housing (64) with a mechanism (66) disposed therein which is potted by a cured mass of self-leveling liquid composition. The present invention comprises a radiation immobilizable epoxy formulation which displays improved initial and thermal cycle strengths when bonding different materials such as terephthalate polyesters and aluminum. The composition comprises:

Epoxy-amine compositions employing unsaturated imides

Epoxy resin adhesives in which polyoxyalkylene polyamines are used as curing agents possess significantly improved initial adhesion and thermal shock resistance when mono- or bis-unsaturated cyclic imides are present, e.g. maleimides, bis-maleimides, bicycloheptene discarboximides, and bis-bicyloheptene dicarboximides.

A composition and method for providing temporary masking of electrical and electronic components compatible with a high speed production operation. The composition is a radiation curable viscous liquid composition which provides minimal adhesion properties and substantial cohesive properties so that when cured, it can be readily removed in the manner of an adhesive tape. In particular, the radiation curable composition is characterized by cured properties a) of positive adhesion to the substrate to which the composition is applied, but insufficient adhesion to resist peeling forces applied by hand; and b) of sufficient cohesive strength to allow substantially all of the cured composition to be stripped mechanically or by hand in a single piece. Suitably the adhesion of the cured composition (22) to the substrate (16) as measured in the tensile shear mode, is between about 5 and 55 psi. This level of adhesion is sufficient to prevent ingress of solvent solder, plating or coating materials but low enough to allow easy dry stripping mechanically or by hand.

A co-curable composition, having utility as a first part of a two-part cationically curable composition and containing a latent curing component which is reactive with a latent curing component in a second part of the two-part composition to form curingly effective cations for the two-part composition, such co-curable composition comprising: (i) a cationically polymerizable material, and (ii) a dioxane-complexed metal salt of a non-nucleophilic anion. Also disclosed is a two-part composition curable by contact of respective parts with one another, comprising first and second parts of the aforementioned types. A two-part composition curable by contact of respective parts with one another, comprising: a first part comprising a cationically polymerizable material and a first latent curing component; and a second part comprising a cationically polymerizable material and a second latent curing component which is reactive with the first component to form cations which are curingly effective for the resin. An adhesive composition which exhibits fast curing through large gaps is disclosed. The composition comprises (A) at least one addition polymerizable vinyl-type monomer; (B) at least one free radical stabilizer; and (C) a free radical cure system. The free radical cure system comprises (i) at least one free radical initiator, and (ii) at least one ferrocene type compound.

Two part self-indicating adhesive composition

Compounds with a plurality of oxirane functional groups can be cured to a fixture in less than one minute with a catalyst composition of a trityl or tropylium salt of a non-nucleophillic anion and a suitable solvent. Typical catalyst salts include trityl tetrafluoroborate, trityl hexachloroantimonate and tropylium hexafluorophosphate. The catalyst composition may conveniently be extended with liquid polymeric vehicles and acidic fillers.
