An equalizer is controlled using a sync signal in a digital vestigial sideband system is provided, in which the sync signal is accurately separated even though a ghost having a short delay time and a large size is generated. A switching unit is provided between a matched filter and the equalizer, which selects one of two input signals according to rejection filter on/off control signals and separates a data segment sync signal and a data field sync signal from the selected input signal. A control signal is produced via the separated sync signal to control the equalizer to operate in one of a blind mode and a training sequence mode. Since the equalizer performs sync signal separation by using the ghost removed signal, a system initial operational time becomes shorter, and accurate sync signal separation is possible even if severe ghosts occur, to thereby improve degeneration of system performance greatly.

Method and apparatus for controlling equalizer using sync signal in digital vestigial sideband system

A circuit for discriminating between received signals and a method therefor are provided. The circuit includes a detector for detecting a peak signal based on the degree of correlation between a received signal and a reference signal and a generator for generating a discrimination signal showing that the received signal is a high definition signal if the peak signal is detected in a predetermined period and showing that the received signal is a signal of an analog broadcasting method if the peak signal is not detected in the predetermined period. This can prevent the improper operation of a receiver by automatically determining whether the received signal according to a channel selection is a high definition digital signal or an analog broadcast signal.

The single ghost canceler includes a first filter coefficient generator for generating first filter coefficients using a first reference signal included in the analog TV signal, a second filter coefficient generator for generating second filter coefficients using a second reference signal included in the digital TV signal, and a digital filter for filtering the analog TV signal using the first filter coefficients if the analog TV signal is received, and the digital TV signal using the second filter coefficients if the digital TV signal is received. Since an equalizer used when receiving a terrestrial digital TV broadcast is also used upon receiving a terrestrial analog TV broadcast, the single equalizer can correspond to both digital and analog TV signals.
