Systems and methods for predicting drill bit wearing state using drilling parameters and formation properties are disclosed. The methods include, for each of a plurality of past bit runs, obtaining a measured rock property value and a measured drilling variable value for the past bit run, and obtaining a measured dull grade for a drill bit used for the past bit run. The methods also include determining parameters of a functional relationship between the measured dull grade, the bit run time, the measured rock property value, and the measured drilling variable value, and predicting a predicted dull grade for a future bit run using a new drill bit. The methods further include replacing the new drill bit with a replacement drill bit at a time based, at least in part, on the predicted dull grade.

Method for predicting rock formation abrasiveness and bit wear

A method and an apparatus for determining a collapse pressure of a well using a drill stem test tool (DSTT). The method includes isolating a zone of interest in the wellbore, then reducing and recording pressure inside the drill string while recording acoustic emissions from the sensors on the DSTT, then correlating the recordings of the acoustic emissions with the pressure. The method includes using the processed acoustic emissions to determine a candidate sound of interest and a pressure at which the candidate sound of interest is recorded, then comparing the candidate sound of interest with a reference lookup table of known lithology classifications. The method includes determining a collapse pressure of the wellbore using the lithology of the wellbore and the pressure at which the candidate sound of interest is recorded.

Systems and methods include a method for determining a breakdown pressure for the wellbore. Input parameters are received for computing a breakdown pressure for a wellbore. A pore pressure is determined using a Stehfest method equation using a function of a time duration, a distance from the wellbore, an injection fluid compressibility, a Biot poroelastic parameter, and a modified Bessel function. A poroelastic stress is determined using a poroelastic stress equation based on the pore pressure determined for the wellbore, a Composite Simpson's Rule for numerical integration, an empirical parameter, a pore pressure, a Biot poroelastic parameter, tensile strength of rock, and a Poisson distribution. A breakdown pressure is determined using a tested time-based formula, poroelastic stress, a minimum and a maximum horizontal stress, using a formula tested against multiple wells and a distance from the wellbore in a radial direction.

Predicting formation breakdown pressure for hydrocarbon recovery applications

Provided is a diagnostic wellbore testing method that includes forming a diagnostic wellbore in a subterranean zone including one or more formations. The wellbore extends through a portion of a formation having a maximum horizontal stress extending in a first direction and a minimum horizontal stress extending in a second direction perpendicular to the first direction. The method also includes forming a pair of notches on a circumference of the wellbore. The pair of notches are formed diametrically opposite each other. The method also includes applying fluidic pressure to the wellbore at the pair of notches in the second direction while avoiding applying fluidic pressure in the first direction. Fractures propagate from the pair of notches responsive to the fluidic pressure. The method also includes measuring a closure pressure of the wellbore, and providing the closure pressure as the maximum horizontal stress of the formation.

Disclosed are methods, systems, and computer-readable medium to perform operations including: determining a state of in-situ earth stresses around a wellbore located in a formation; transforming the in-situ earth stresses from a global Cartesian coordinate system to a local wellbore coordinate system; calculating, based on the transformed in-situ earth stresses in the local wellbore coordinate system, principal stresses around the wellbore; generating, using a failure criterion that incorporates (i) principal stresses, (ii) mud weight, and (iii) rock strength, a function for calculating a rock compressive failure; and predicting, using the function, a failure zone around the wellbore.

Methods and systems for determining risk of pipe deformation in a hydraulic fracturing operation include receiving a plurality of parameters pertaining to the well operation from a plurality of wells, developing a relationship between the plurality of parameters and a risk of pipe deformation, receiving the plurality of parameters pertaining to the well operation from a predetermined well, and determining the risk of pipe deformation in the predetermined well based on the plurality of parameters. The method further includes taking corrective action to prevent the pipe from deformation, such as improving the cementing conditions of the casing, performing cement bond evaluation, choosing safe locations for hydraulic fracturing or skipping zones of high risk or managing around pipe deformation by deploying flow-through bridge plugs, or dissolvable bridge plugs, or any other type of isolation method that does not require well intervention to remove the barrier or altogether re-drill a new well.
