A fuel cell, fuel cell array and methods of forming the same are disclosed. The fuel cell can be made by forming a first aperture defined by a first aperture surface through a first electrode layer and forming a second aperture defined by a second aperture surface through a second electrode layer. A proton exchange membrane is laminated between the first electrode layer and the second electrode layer. At least a portion of the first aperture is at least partially aligned with the second aperture.

Micro fuel cell

A mesotube apparatus is disclosed which includes a header insulator in order to avoid premature breakdown at lower voltage that occurs between a cathode and an anode in a discharge assembly. A chamber can be mounted on a header base and can be located away from plasma surrounded with dielectric so that breakdown occurs outside the normal voltage operating range. A number of feed-through pins associated with the header base can be electrically isolated from the header base by a dielectric insulator. The dielectric insulator can also be placed over the header base and topside of the chamber in order to passivate from stray electrons and plasma. The header base can be thin which allows welding of the anode and the cathode to the feed-through pins with a weld tool attached to the side of the feed-through pins. The chamber can be located on the header base by tightly fitting to the feed-through pins.

One embodiment includes an electromagnetic sensor which includes a header, an anode connected to a first terminal extending through the header, the anode in electrical isolation from the header, a cathode connected to a second terminal extending through the header, the cathode in electrical isolation from the header, a conductive case including a window transparent to electromagnetic energy, the conductive case enclosing the anode and the cathode and hermetically sealed to the header and an insulative sleeve disposed between the anode and the case and between the cathode and the conductive case.

A rugged O.sub.2 microsensor constructed from Si, and Pt, Si.sub.3 N.sub.4 and ZrO.sub.2 thin films which is free standing and isolated from the silicon substrate in combination with a counter electrode and a heater in a bow-tie configuration. The sensor combines an integral heater made from platinum which is deposited on a silicon wafer as a thin film. The thin film heater heats a small yttria-stabilized zirconia sensor that sends a signal proportional to the amount of oxygen in the ambient environment through a counter electrode. The sensor and heater are supported on the silicon wafer by a thin layer of silicon nitride.
