The transmitter includes a frequency shift circuit configured to selectively apply different frequency shifts to the first and second spatial streams signals. A wireless receiver includes a frequency shift circuit configured to selectively apply different frequency shifts to the received first and second spatial streams signals. A method and apparatus for calibrating an antenna array. The apparatus includes first and second couplers, a calibration transceiver, and a controller. The first coupler operably is connected to a first number of antennas. The second coupler is operably connected to a second number of antennas. The calibration transceiver is operably connected to the first and second couplers via a common path. The controller is configured to perform calibration on at least one or more transmit/receive paths for the second number of antennas based on at least one or more signals received from or transmitted to the first and second couplers via the common path by the calibration transceiver. The first and second numbers of antennas may each include only one antenna, or the first and second numbers of antennas may each be a group of multiple antennas.

Antenna array self-calibration

An apparatus and method linearize a power amplifier in a transmitter by using a dual time alignment scheme. A first adjustable time delay unit delays a modulator signal input of a power amplifier. A first time delay estimator estimates a time delay between the delayed feedback signal and the reference signal, and adjusts the first adjustable time delay unit based on the estimated time delay between the delayed feedback signal and the reference signal. A second adjustable time delay unit delays the feedback signal. And a second time delay estimator estimates the time delay between the delayed feedback signal and the reference signal, and adjusts the second adjustable time delay unit based on the estimated time delay between the delayed feedback signal and the reference signal.

Dual time alignment architecture for transmitters using EER/ET amplifiers and others

A method used in a transmitting device comprising a non-linear amplifier and a digital predistortion (DPD) circuit. The method updates real and imaginary look-up tables used by the DPD. The method comprises: i) time-aligning a complex input signal, A, and a complex output signal, E. Signal A is a scan from 0 to a maximum value comprising N discrete points and signal E also comprises N discrete points. The method comprises: ii) performing an array division of A/E=(Y, Y), where Yand Yare the real and imaginary components, respectively; and iii) computing a real curve and an imaginary curve using curve-fitting algorithms that best fit the data with coordinates (|A|, Y) and (|A|, Y). The method stores the real curve in a real lookup table (LUT) and the imaginary curve in an imaginary lookup table (LUT). The method iteratively updates the real LUT and the imaginary LUT.

Apparatus and method for digital predistortion of non-linear amplifiers

An apparatus and method for aligning input and feedback signals in a transmission circuit are provided. The method includes capturing an input signal and a feedback signal, determining a first time delay between the input signal and the feedback signal, determining a second time delay between the input signal and the feedback signal, the determination of the second time delay having a higher resolution than the determination of the first time delay, and applying the first time delay and the second time delay to temporally align the input signal with the feedback signal. Use of the present invention provides an improved resolution of time alignment while reducing the overall complexity and cost of the transmission circuit.

Time alignment algorithm for transmitters with EER/ET amplifiers and others

A device and a method for crest factor reduction reduces peak-to-average ratio (PAR) to increase power amplifier efficiency. A first hard clipping block performs hard clipping on an input signal when the amplitude of the input signal is greater than a first threshold. A shaping filter reshapes the spectrum of the hard clipped signal. An interpolator increases the sampling rate of the reshaped signal. A second hard clipping block performs hard clipping on the interpolated signal when the amplitude of the interpolated signal is greater than a second threshold.
