A method and corresponding system is provided help establish a zone-based paging configuration. In accordance with the method, a RAN entity may evaluate the level of traffic in several small cells of the RAN, identify those small cells that have at least a threshold level of traffic, and responsively construct a new tracking area that includes the identified small cells. In another aspect of the method, a UE that is registered in a current tracking area, may move into coverage of a new sector and receive from a base station associated with the new sector two or more tracking area IDs. The UE may then determine that at least one of the tracking area IDs is indicative of the tracking area in which the UE is currently registered, and responsively operate in the new sector without transmitting a tracking area update message.

Configuration of tracking area layers

A method, system, and medium are provided for managing CDMA reference cell identifiers (IDs) in a long-term-evolution (LTE) network using Session Initiation Protocol (SIP). A network node subscribes to RF coverage information and location information of eNodeBs and CDMA base stations within the network. After receiving this information from the eNodeBs and the CDMA base stations, the network node uses the information to determine CDMA base stations that are in proximity to each eNodeB. The eNodeBs in the network subscribe to CDMA reference cell IDs of those CDMA base stations that have been determined by the network node to be in proximity to the respective eNodeB. After receiving the CDMA reference cell IDs from the network node, the eNodeB utilizes the received information to select a CDMA base station to utilize when a network customer's UE requires circuit-switched services.

Management of CDMA reference cell identifiers in an LTE network

Methods and systems for using coverage or capacity classifications regarding a macro RF network to manage registration of femtocells with a service provider network (SPN) so as to avoid signaling overload are described herein. After a wide-scale power outage within an area where multiple femtocells are located, the femtocells can power on and attempt to register with the SPN at about the same time. The femtocells can scan RF signals received from the macro network and classify the received RF signals with respect to capacity or coverage of the macro network at the time of transmitting the RF signals. A device within the SPN can determine whether classification of the received RF signals is associated with dropping or accepting a registration request associated with the classified RF signals. The SPN device can accept the registration request or drop the registration request and request the femtocell to transmit another registration request.

Methods and systems for using macro coverage to manage femtocell registrations, so as to avoid signaling overload

Embodiments relate generally to systems and methods for receiving communication on a head unit, wherein the communication may be sent to a mobile device coupled to the head unit. The head unit may be enabled to receive communication sent to the mobile device by an application on the head unit, wherein the application may communicate with the network in communication with the mobile device. The head unit may be operable to receive communication sent to a plurality of mobile devices, wherein the head unit may prioritize the received communication. Communication sent to the mobile device and/or head unit may comprise calls, messages, emails, and/or data.

Dual path in-vehicle communication

Disclosed are a method, apparatus, and system for managing repeat-paging processes within a radio access network. When a base station receives a paging directive, the base station begins broadcasting a first series of page messages destined to a mobile station. Responsive to the first base station receiving no response from the mobile station to the first series of page messages and responsive to the mobile station determining a load state and/or an application type, the first base station decides to send a repeat-paging directive from the first base station to a second base station without routing the repeat-paging directive through the control node or rather to route the repeat-paging directive through the control node and then to the second base station. The repeat-paging directive directs the second base station to begin broadcasting a second series of page messages destined to the mobile station.

Method and system for base station repeat paging

Methods are disclosed for routing data, such as a packet, from a source router to a destination router based on geographical information associated with a destination mobile device. A table is accessed to determine whether there is a destination router located in the list of routers that is located within the same geographical area as the destination mobile device. If there is a destination router that meets this criteria, the data is sent to the destination router. But if there is not a destination router that meets this criteria, the data is routed based on network topology.

A method for operating a control module to allocate traffic exchanges between an intermediate network and a plurality of carrier networks in a communication system is provided. The method includes monitoring first traffic transferring from the intermediate network to a first carrier network to determine an amount of outbound traffic, and monitoring second traffic transferring from the first carrier network to the intermediate network to determine an amount of inbound traffic. The method also includes determining a supplemental amount based on the amount of outbound traffic and the amount of inbound traffic, and transmitting a control message that identifies the supplemental amount to a second carrier network instructing the second carrier network to transfer supplemental traffic in an amount less than or equal to the supplemental amount.

The communication system then determines the cell substitution method based on the information. The communication system generates an instruction to use the cell substitution method for the call. The communication system advantageously uses an optimal cell substitution method for each different type of call. The communication system uses the optimal cell substitution method when a cell is lost or misinserted.

A system and method for connecting a call includes a signaling processor adapted to receive and process call signaling to select connections for a call. The signaling processor transmits control messages designating the selected connections. A controllable time division multiplex matrix receives control messages from the signaling processor and, in response to the control messages, makes connections for the call. The system and method may include an interworking unit that receives control messages from the signaling processor and, in response to the control messages, interworks the calls to selected connections. The system and method may include an asynchronous transfer mode matrix that receives control messages from the signaling processor and, in response to the control messages, connects the calls to selected connections.

System and method for connecting calls with a time division multiplex matrix

A communication system includes a signaling processor that receives and processes SS7 message to select virtual paths. The communication system includes an interworking system that converts time division multiplex communications into asynchronous communications for transfer over the selected virtual paths. The communication system includes a bandwidth management system that allocates spare bandwidth from one virtual path to another based on messages from the signaling processor, but does not allow the bandwidth of a virtual path to exceed a maximum threshold.

System and method for allocating bandwidth for a call

A system and method for allocating bandwidth in an asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) system over-allocates bandwidth in virtual paths for virtual path groups between ATM devices. A bandwidth allocation platform manages the virtual paths in the ATM system to control allocation and to prevent congestion, while providing efficient utilization of the bandwidth within the ATM system. The bandwidth allocation system over-allocates virtual paths for virtual path groups that require additional bandwidth to make connections for calls. When a connection is selected on the over-allocated virtual path, the virtual path may use bandwidth from another virtual path in the virtual path group or from a virtual path in another virtual path group if needed. A communication device transports user communications and call signaling for a call. A signaling processor processes the call signaling to select a connection in one of the over-allocated virtual paths for the call over the virtual path group. An interworking unit interworks the user communications from the format in which the user communications are received from the communication device to asynchronous transfer mode cells that identify the selected connection.
