Systems and methods for controlling network configurations or assignments are provided. A method, according to one implementation, includes a step of calculating transmission characteristics between each pair of a plurality of pairs of modems at opposite ends of a Dense Wavelength-Division Multiplexing (DWDM) transport link using specifications of the modems measured during production. The method also includes the step of selecting a pair of modems from the plurality of pairs of modems based on results obtained by calculating the transmission characteristics and based on one or more user-defined service requests.

Matching transmitters with receivers for making network-level assignments

Systems and methods for creating a spectrum assignment for use by an optical network element are provided. In one implementation, an optical network element may include line devices configured to communicate optical signals with external network elements along one or more degrees. The optical network element may also include add/drop devices configured to perform at least one of adding one or more optical channels to the optical signals and removing one or more optical channels to the optical signals. The line devices and add/drop devices are configured to receive control signals from a spectrum management controller, the control signals being configured to allocate a first spectrum assignment for routing the optical signals through the line devices and further configured to allocate a second spectrum assignment for routing the optical signals through the add/drop devices. For example, the second spectrum assignment may be different from the first spectrum assignment.

Spectrum assignments for application throughout an optical network element in a flexible-channel configuration

A controller for an optical network includes a network interface configured to communicate to one or more nodes in an optical network that includes a plurality of nodes interconnected by a plurality of links; a processor communicatively coupled to the network interface; and memory storing instructions that, when executed, cause the processor to obtain information related to a plurality of services that require spectrum assignment with each service given a time-constraint T for restoration to a restoration path and each service on its home route given a margin-constraint X dB for transients caused by restoring channels, classify each of the plurality of services in terms of viable paths in the optical network, restoration speed each viable path can tolerate, and re-tunability, and assign a home route and a restoration route, a restoration speed, and spectrum for each of the plurality of services based on priority.

Spectrum assignment systems and methods include, for an optical network with a plurality of links with optical spectrum on each of the plurality of links managed utilizing a flexible grid, obtaining a set of S services which require spectrum assignment on various links in the optical network; partitioning the set of S services into a plurality of groups G, wherein each group has one or more of the S services that are disjoint from one another based on occupancy of links, and wherein the plurality of groups G are selected based on fill which is a number of links occupied of the plurality of links, standard deviation, and width of spectrum; determining a sequence of the plurality of groups that minimizes useless spectrum, the useless spectrum being slots of spectrum unavailable for new channels; and assigning spectrum to the set of S services based on the determined sequence.

Flexible grid bulk spectrum assignment systems and methods

Partial optimization systems and methods of wavelengths or spectrum in an optical network include, based on current services in the optical network each having a route and wavelength assignment and based on a ratio of services that can be changed in the partial optimization, preforming a first stage optimization to determine which of the current services are changed for one or more of the route and the wavelength assignment to attain a reduction of a number of wavelengths; performing a second stage optimization to determine an order of implementing changes from the first stage optimization that with the order minimizing one or more of conflicts and step counts; and causing implementation of the changes in the optical network.

Optimal partial reconfiguration of spectrum in optical networks

Systems and methods for determining minimal spectrum occupancy in routing and wavelength/spectrum assignment (RWA/RSA) in an optical network include performing, for a new demand request, a set of binary operations using a binary representation for each wavelength or portion of spectrum over all links in the optical network; and selecting, based on the set of binary operations, i) a route and ii) one of a) a wavelength and b) one or more portions of spectrum for the new demand request.
