A wireless device may use two communication interfaces that utilize frequencies within the same band. As a result, a first communication interface such as an HDMI interface may interfere with operation of a second communication interface such as a WiFi interface. A conductive member is placed between the communication interfaces to reduce this interference. The conductive member has multiple slots, each slot having dimensions that cause resonance at a frequency used by the first communication interface. The number and spacing of the slots corresponds to the strength of signals used by the second communication interface. Placement of the conductive member between the first and second communication interfaces enables the conductive member to attenuate signals from the second communication interface that would interfere with the frequency used by the first communication interface.

Patterned housing element to reduce interference

An antenna assembly includes a housing and first and second antennas enclosed within the housing. The first antenna provides a first radiation pattern oriented for wireless communication with a cloud-based network. The second antenna provides a second radiation pattern that is oriented different than the first radiation pattern and is oriented for wireless communication with a portable user device.

Antennas for managed devices, and related systems and methods

An electronic device is described. This electronic device includes: an interface circuit; and an antenna having a radiator and multiple pairs of reflectors arranged along different axes passing through the radiator in a horizontal plane. A given pair of reflectors includes reflectors on opposite sides of the radiator and along a given axis. During operation, the interface circuit provides control signals to switching elements that selectively electrically couple one or more of the reflectors in the pairs of reflectors to ground, where the one or more of the reflectors modify an antenna radiation pattern of the radiator. Then, the interface circuit communicates, via the antenna, a packet or a frame with a second electronic device, where the communication involves transmitting or receiving wireless signals corresponding to the packet or the frame.

Reconfigurable antenna with a strands antenna radiation pattern

An electronic device includes: a first pair of antennas having a first polarization along a first direction in a plane, where the first pair of antennas are spatially offset from each other along a second direction in the plane; and a second pair of antennas having a second polarization along the second direction, where the second pair of antennas are spatially offset from each other along the first direction. During operation, the electronic device may configure switching elements to: select the first pair of antennas and electrically couple the second pair of antennas to ground; or select the second pair of antennas and electrically couple the first pair of antennas to ground. Then, the electronic device may communicate a packet or a frame with a second electronic device via the selected first pair of antennas or the second pair of antennas.

Hybrid antenna with polarization flexibility

An electronic device that uses an arbitrary transmit polarization is described. This electronic device includes: a first antenna having a first predefined polarization; and a second antenna having a second predefined polarization, where the second predefined polarization is different from the first predefined polarization. During operation, an interface circuit in the electronic device selectively transmits, from the first antenna, first wireless signals corresponding to the packet or the frame. Moreover, the interface circuit selectively transmits, from the second antenna, second wireless signals corresponding to the packet or the frame, where the second wireless signals have a same magnitude as the first wireless signals, and the second wireless signals are transmitted from the second antenna concurrently (or at the same time) as the first wireless signals are transmitted from the first antenna. Note that the interface circuit may dynamically modify the transmit polarization during the communication.

Communication using arbitrary selectable polarization

Antenna structures and methods of operating the same are described. One antenna structure includes a ground plane, a feed point, an antenna element, and a parasitic element. The feed point can be coupled to the antenna element and can receive a signal to cause the antenna structure to radiate electromagnetic energy. The antenna element includes: a first portion that extends in a first direction from the feeding point at the RF feed; a second portion that extends from a distal end of the first portion; a third portion that extends from a side of the second portion; a fourth portion that extends from the third portion; and a fifth portion that extends from the fourth portion. The parasitic element includes: a sixth portion that extends from the fourth portion; and the seventh portion that extends from the sixth portion to the ground plane.

Wireless local area network antenna for a metal housing

An antenna structure with a radio frequency (RF) circuit, an antenna carrier, and conductive material disposed on the antenna carrier and coupled to the RF circuit slot is described. The conductive material can radiate or receive first electromagnetic energy as a loop antenna in a first frequency band in a second order mode. The conductive material can include a first slot between portions of the conductive material and a second slot between other portions of the conductive material. The first slot or the second slot can radiate or receive second electromagnetic energy as a slot antenna at a second frequency band in a first order mode. The second frequency band can be higher than the first frequency band.

Dual band antenna with a first order mode and a second order mode

Antenna structures and methods of operating the same are described. One apparatus includes a metal cover having a first corner ground element, a second corner ground element, a first strip element, a second strip element, a radio frequency (RF) feed, and a RF circuit. The first strip element is physically separated from the first corner ground element by a first cutout in the metal cover. The first strip element is physically separated from the second strip element by a second cutout in the metal cover. The second strip element is physically separated from the second corner ground element by a third cutout in the metal cover. The RF circuitry is coupled to the RF feed, where the RF circuitry is operable to cause the first corner ground element and the first strip element as well as the second corner ground element and the second strip element to radiate electromagnetic energy.

Single feed passive antenna for a metal back cover

Antenna structures and methods of operating the same are described. One apparatus includes a metal cover having a first corner portion, a second corner portion, and an elongated portion. The elongated portion is physically separated from the first corner portion by a first cutout in the metal cover and the elongated portion is physically separated from the second corner portion by a second cutout in the metal cover. A radio frequency (RF) circuit is coupled to a feeding element that is coupled to the elongated portion. A capacitor is coupled between the feeding element and the first corner portion near the distal end of the feeding element. The RF circuit is operable to cause the feeding element, the elongated portion, and the first corner portion to radiate electromagnetic energy as a first radiator in a first frequency range with dual resonance.

Loop-feeding wireless area network (WAN) antenna for metal back cover

Antenna structures and methods of operating the same of a dual-loop-slot antenna of an electronic device are described. One dual-loop-slot antenna includes a first loop antenna coupled to a radio frequency (RF) feed and a ground plane, a second loop coupled to the RF feed and the ground plane. At least a portion of the second loop antenna is formed by the first loop antenna. The dual-loop-slot antenna also includes a slot antenna formed at least in part by a portion of at least one of the first loop antenna or the second loop antenna.

Quad-slot antenna structures of user devices and methods of operating the user devices with the quad-slot antenna structures are described. One apparatus includes a RF feed coupled to a quad-slot antenna, including a first slot and a second slot and a third slot and a fourth slot. The first slot and the second slot are driven elements and the third slot and the fourth slot are parasitic elements.

A proximity detection module determines, using an infrared (IR) sensor of a user device, a distance between an object and the user device. The proximity detection module compares the distance to a distance threshold. If the distance is below the predefined distance threshold, the proximity detection module determines, using a capacitance sensor of the user device, a capacitance value associated with the object. The proximity detection module compares the capacitance value to a predefined presence threshold, and if the capacitance value meets or exceeds the predefined presence threshold, determines that the object comprises a body part of a user.
